Peru trip report by FairMail founder Peter den Hond

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

In the end of December FairMail founder Peter den Hond left for a 3 week visit to FairMail Peru. Read all about his highs, his lows and his dilemmas:

69225 “For me the three weeks where filled with respect for the endurance of the teenagers, dilemmas about cultural differences and fun during the travelling and shooting pictures together. Experiences that recharged my “FairMail batteries” to get back to work on FairMail in the Netherlands.

Respect

One of the goals of the trip was like always to tell the teenagers who their cards are being received by consumers in the west. Only when they know which cards sell well and for what type of images there is a demand can they adapt their product to the wishes of the market. And of course that way earn more money!

Besides strengthening the ties with the teenagers is very important for me. During the rest of the year we always miss each other greatly and you feel that even more when you speak to each other again. I have heard many personal stories again. Like one of the girls who is being beaten by her step father and had to ask police protection. Or another teenager whoms irresponsible dad  hasn’t been sending money home to his family for a number of weeks. The family is now in debt just to buy food to eat. And the story about one of the ex-street children who now leaves in a boys home but is very worried about his mother because his family members at home are fighting alot. Sometimes even attacking each other with knives!

cinthia225Luckily there are also good stories. In December Patricia, Mariluz and Yuli finished secondary school and have started follow-up education. Cinthia actually graduated to become a tourist guide (click here for more pictures on her facebook!). She is the first FairMail teenager to finish a multiple year higher education! And Juan Carlos is doing his practical period in a pizzeria. We once started FairMail to break the chain of poverty, so the teenagers can later establish families in which their kids will have better oppertunities then they received from their own parents. The sale of their cards is important for that, but their own perseverence keeps being the source of it all. That is why my respect for them is so big. Even inspiring!

Dilemmas

Over the whole of 2010 the profit for the teenagers in Peru grew by 30% compared to 2009 to a total of 12.500 euro. That’s great, but it can always be better! Dat caused by biggest dilemma. With my western view of things, oriented at efficiency and keeping strict rules, I saw that FairMail Peru was doing well, but could do a lot better. Should I accept that things are less efficient compared to when we where still living in Peru? Or should we move back to the strict and efficient base we had when Janneke started FairMail in 2006? And in that case would we be able to get more out of the concept of FairMail? Or just ruin things created by our local team?

A good example is one of the teenagers who takes pretty good pictures and because of that has a reasonable income from FairMail and also importantly has a lot of joy by being part of the “FairMail family”. But he is often late for classes and sometimes behaves very irresponsibly with the camera we lend him. Our local manager doesn’t always correct him in a disciplinary way and thus FairMail is not providing this teenager with the possibly valuable work experience we would like to offer. Also with respect to personal guidance there is still a lot to improve so he spends his earnings efficiently and effectively in his plan for the future which he still doesn’t have.

PP225Fun

I could observe these kind of “problems” very well during the 9 day photography trip to the Peruvian Andes. During this great trip we worked really hard on new pictures for the 2011 Christmas Card collection (view the first results here). But we also got to know each other a lot better. For example during the 6 hour walk to a mountain lake at 4.620 meters where we literately had to drag each other to the top. (click here for more pictures on Facebook) Also the teenagers got to know new cultural aspects of their own country by staying with a local farmer family high in the mountains for 5 days. Especially when your parents can never take you on a holiday this is a great oppertunity for the kids to increase their world view.

After three intense weeks of being together the hard and emotional good bye that followed was predictable. At least we could say “See you in July”. And to Elmer we could even say “See you in May” when he will be coming to Europe for a 3 week promotional tour for FairMail!

Cinthia Vega Inga

Hi my name is Cinthia and I am an ex-photographer from FairMail Perú.

I entered FairMail when I was about 15 years old, and I tell you that we met Janneke and Pèter, both Dutch, when they where volunteering for a NGO called ACJ (asociación cristiana de jóvenes del Peru), and Mundo de Ninos.

Seeing that we where curious about having a camera in our hands they had the great idea in their little heads that told them “these kids need a camera in their hands” and like that their dream became reality.

What happened after that? Their thoughts became reality and we started with 14 or 15 kids of which only 4 got to stay. I was one of them, together with a friend called Rosita and two friends called Luis and David. We all made use of this great oppertunity given to us by people who gave us information about photography, who where our teachers. In the beginning they themselves taught us and after that came the volunteers, mainly from Holland. Well time passed and we went on photography trips to take more great pictures. These pictures made a big transformation to become postcards even for export! This created an income but with a few conditions attached. As the kids that participate in this business called FairMail (correo justo) we are have little economic means, and this money is divided in different parts like: education fund, cloathing fund, housing fund and health fund.

Thanks to the help of the postcards and the people who bought them we where able to acheive many things that perhaps our parents wouldn’t have been abot to give us on the long term.

I Cinthia Vega thank janneke, Peter, and all of those who help us. Thanks to the sale of my cards and the profit that came from them I bought my own computer which helped me a lot to do my school work. Of course I also started studyiny at an institute in Trujillo called  ”Cevatur Trujillo”. And after three years I finished my career and now I am doing my practical period at the Temple of the Sun and the Moon, an historic site. And I also work as guide on FairMail’s photography trips.

But that’s not all. I can also tell you that when you turn 19 years old your participation in FairMail ends. But they gave me the opportunity to keep on working as assistant manager. That way I managed to save the 1.100 soles (300 euros) for the construcion of my own sleeping room and I keep earning money from the sale of my cards.

A thousand thanks to all of you. I love you

Greetings: cinthia vega

FairMail pioneers visit FairMail Peru

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Mid July Peter den Hond and Janneke Smeulders went to Peru for a 4 week visit to the first FairMail unit they founded in 2006. Peter tells us about what they encountered.

“Visiting FairMail Peru is always an energizing experience for us. After all it is where it all started and the beginning of the wonderful flow experience we are now in with FairMail. Also the place we lived for 4 years still means a lot to us, just like the many friends we still have there. Of course especially the teenagers and managers of FairMail Peru!”

“The good thing about the first encounters is hearing about how the kids and their families are doing. And what their plans are. For example from 3 kids we heard that they where about to start university and 2 of them told us how much they liked their cooking classes. Unfortunately there was also one teenager who pulled out of prep school due to problems at home. And we where shocked to hear about another ex-FairMail participant who is wanted by the Peruvian police for extortion and another who was caught for armed assault! It makes you realize again just how difficult the environments are where our teenagers come from. And that these environments and “friends” sometimes have a lot of force to pull them back in. Despite the perspectives FairMail tries to provide them.”

“The goal of the visit this time was also to introduce a new policy called “Mi camera Propia” (Spanish for “My Own Camera”). The goal was to increase the quality of the cameras the teenagers currently borrow from FairMail. The use of better and more expensive camera’s means the teenagers have to learn to manage an even bigger responsibility. So only the ones that wanted to got the chance to invest their earnings in a new camera. FairMail provided support by paying for 25% of the purchase price  and giving credit facilities to pay for the camera in 12 months. After that period the teenagers become owners of their own camera which means they can keep using it after they leave FairMail at the age of 19. This perspective and the fact that they are paying for the cameras themselves we hope will stimulate the teenagers to treat their new toys with great responsibility. If successful the same policy will be implemented in India in March 2012.”

“Also we made a 7 day photography trip to Huamachuco. This time without any tourists but with the whole FairMail team. It proved to be a great team building experience. Besides taking pictures for the next card collection together we also talked about the importance of working as a team, sexual education and made plans for FairMail’s marketing in Peru.”

Update of visit to FairMail india by FairMail pioneer Janneke

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

FairMail pioneer Janneke Smeulders visited FairMail India for the third time in October 2010. This is her story:

“My visit of 3 weeks to the FairMail India team was intensive, impressive and great at the same time, a lot has happened:

Welcome and new office:

On the train station in Varanasi I was welcomed warmly by our manager Akshay, FairMail photographers Dhiraj and Akaash and our American and Swiss volunteers Brittanie and Carole. So it was a cosy and fun ride through the busy streets to the office! Since September we are located in a new office which I had not seen yet so that was a nice surprise: a fine location, a good, big and clean office with 2 extra rooms for volunteers and a huge rooftop terrace that we can use for warm up games and photography classes.

Great! The atmosphere in the office is very good, there is a lot of laughter in the team and good cooperation. It is great to see how well Akshay is running this office. Big compliments to him! We did a lot of games and also a serious workshop about the individual reasons to be in FairMail and the personal goals of all of us. From those results we formulated our common goals. Some of the dreams that the students have turn out to be the dreams of their parents: for example Anuj wants to become a hardware engineer but does not know what this profession is exactly nor how to become one: it is his father that says that he wants his son to become a hardware engineer. In good communication with the parents we want to try and stimulate the students to think for themselves what they like to do and what they would like to become.

Setting our common goals as FairMail team

Photographer Sonu dies:

Two days after my arrival, Sonu died, for me that was unexpectedly quick although he had hepatitis B for years already. Family and the FairMail students told me how he wanted to be a good host until the last moment and how he kept on being serving and polite. When his body gave up, he still managed to step outside and lie on the floor outside his house. There is where he passed away. Sad and impressive for everybody around him. Sonu was carried to the Ganges and cremated, his ashes were spread out in the holy river. With the memories and through his photos that FairMail shows to the whole world, Sonu and his way to look at the world will stay alive.

The first FairMail India photography trip:

Sandhya, Akaash en Dhiraj had the best personal scores (they get points for motivation, coming in time, helping Akshay etc.) so they were invited to go on this photography excursion to the hill station of Pachmarhi, 14 hours by train from Varanasi. Also Akshay, Brittanie and me went and Eileen, our only “voluntourist” that had booked the trip through internet (check out her great pictures by clicking here). Eileen was so great to collect donations among her friends and family so that the costs for all 3 teenagers were covered! The trip was a big success: we all fully enjoyed the green nature, the waterfalls, the friendly and relaxed people (what a difference with the big city!) and each others company.

Made it with the whole team to the waterfall

Made it with the whole team to the waterfall

Eating 3 meals a day together was an important part of the trip, as this was great to get to know each other better…. and because the food was so tasty! For the 3 students this was the first time they were on a train and in a hotel, so that was impressive. The 6 students that stayed behind in Varanasi missed them a lot, they called daily! Also from a photographic view the trip was a success: we made a great new selection of photos that will go on-line on the website soon!”
