FairMail India photographer Dhiraj promoted to assistant manager

Dhiraj in the FairMail India office

Dhiraj in the FairMail India office

On the first of May 2012 FairMail India photographer Dhiraj retired from FairMail after three years working as teenage photographer. Because of his responsible attitude and improved English skills he got a new job as the first assistant manager of FairMail India. We asked him what he thought of his early retirement and the new challenge ahead of him. Here is what he said:

What do you think about your retirement from FairMail as photographer?

“Retirement from FairMail as a photographer its little bit sad because I enjoy taking photos for postcards. I miss that very much. The way I learn photography and English in FairMail was very cool. And also my friends in FairMail have more years then me as I started at an older age. I wish that I could have had more time as a photographer.”

(FairMail works with teenagers until they reach the age of 19. Then they retire, handing over there camera to a new and younger teenager so they can have the same opportunity. This way we prevent dependency from FairMail and make it clear to the teenagers that they only have a certain amount of time in which they have to be very motivated to get out of FairMail what is in it for them. Their “pension” consists of 50% of the earnings of their pictures which FairMail keeps selling for them as long as possible. They can’t product NEW pictures though.)

What did you like most about your time as photographer? What was your best memory?

“As a photographer I like taking photo’s with friends and having fun together. Every day was nice. I always got something to learn and improve myself. But my best memory was when my photo was selected for the HEMA christmas cards. That was my best memory. I was very happy because there was competition from Peru and India and Peru got 4 out of the five pictures selected by the HEMA.”

What was the most valuable thing you got out of your time as photographer for FMI?

“I earned money, photography skills and I learnt English.”

As you can read on Dhiraj’s profile page he earned 2050 euro so far with the sale of his photographs and cards.

What do you think about your new job as assistant to Akshay?

“It is a new experience for me. I have things like translating before during classes, but then I was still a photographer. I like FairMail so much as I said, I wish I could have more time in FairMail as a photographer because I will learn more things. Akshay, our national coordinator, has so many work to do in FairMail and outside of FairMail so I like to help him because he help us lot.”

What do you think you still need to learn to do  better to be a good assistant manager?

“I need to improve my in English, think like a responsible person and be strict but in a cool way.”

Which of your new tasks do you like?

“I like translating the English photography classes the volunteers teach us into hindi for the students because I like to teach people.”

Besides translating the photography classes Dhiraj is also in charge of giving photography classes when there aren’t any volunteers and help manage the pictures the teenagers take and store on FairMail’s computer.

FairMail’s European promotion tour ready to start

Friday, May 18th, 2012

FairMail is ready to get started with it’s European promotional tour that will take place from the 11th of June until the 3rd of July 2012. Special guests are two of FairMail India’s teenage photographers, Dhiraj and Anil. We just thought “Who is better at explaining the unique story behind the FairMail Cards and the impact it has on the life of its teenage photographers than the photographers themselves?”

Destinations

During the three week tour they will be visiting The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium (download the itinerary here). In each country they will be promoting FairMail via interviews with the media, meetings with the shops and sales people that sell their cards and of course directly with the people that buy their cards at public music festivals. Besides promotion the other goal of the trip is that they investigate “their” Western greeting card market. What kind of pictures sell well, what are the latest trends and what is the competition doing? Back home in India they will present and share their valuable market knowledge with their fellow young photographers so the whole team is better equipped to sell to their main market. Besides these “serious” goals the trip will simple be the trip of their lifetime and a chance to meet up with former photography volunteers and participant of the photography trips to India in the past. What an experience!

Meet the teenagers

For you it is a unique possibility to meet the teenagers in person, hear their personal story and ask any questions you want. Feel free to hook up with us anywhere along the road. Find out when we will be close to you by downloading the travel itinerary here.

On the 12 of June we are also organizing a kick-off event for the tour in Amsterdam. The teenagers will present themselves, we will be showing a movie about their life in India and what there work for FairMail looks like, opening of a photography exhibition and an American auction of one of their photographs. It will be a big party and a great chance to meet them. You can download your invitation here.

How do they celebrate mothersday in Peru?

FairMail Peru teenagers with their mothers

FairMail Peru teenagers with their mothers

Next Sunday is mothersday in many parts of the world. We thought it would be interesting to ask the teenagers in Peru to tell us how they celebrate mothersday and what their mothers mean to them. Read their answers below or watch the pictures from India too on facebook:

José Luis:

“In Peru we celebrate mothersday on the second sunday of May. On this day the whole family comes together and we give choclate, roses and houshold appliances to our mothers. People who lost their mothers go to the cementary to leave behind flowers.”

Betty:

“My mother is the best human being who I am thankful for giving me life. She is always there to support me at all moments with her big and unconditional love. The love of a mother can’t be compared to any other kind of love.”

Anidela:

“My mother is the most important thing in my life. She is my force, my will, my guide, my everything”

Yuli:

“I have the best mother of the world because despite all the problems in our life she has always fought to get ahead in life. I still remember her working so hard with my father with sweat gushing from their foreheads. Also when I am sick she doesn’t sleep to take care of me. Sometimes I think life will be too short to be able to thank her”

Patricia:

“I have the best mother of the worl because she brought me here healthy despite the many problems we had in life. I am very grateful to god to have my mother close to me.”

Yomira:

“I have the best mother because she is always by my side and helps me every day to become a better person.”

Jorge:

“I have the best mother of the whole world because she is always sweet to me and gives me all her love. I can always trust on her and also tell here everything. She is always there for me, also when I am sick. My mother is like a guardian angle for me.”

Sebastián:

“In Peru we give our mothers a gift during motherday, material or not. The biggest gift is a kiss, a hug or a smile. ”

This year you can surprise your mother with your own personalized FairMail mothersday card! Our teenage photographers in Peru and India made many pictures that represent the love for our mothers. You can choose from many different models on the Greetz website (click here for German) (click here for english). In a few simple steps you can choose the picture of your choice, design your card and write your own text. Greetz then prints and posts the card for you. If you make the card before 8pm this friday Greetz will deliver your card in time. Very easy and very nice to do!

Even more because in the inside of the card your mother will not only read jour sweet words, but also read the name, age and picture of the FairMail teenager who took the picture and earns money that way to finance his or her own education.

Below the teenage photographers tell how they celebrate mothersday in Peru and what their mothers mean to them:

Sebastian with his family at home

Sebastian with his family at home

Hola my name is Sebastián and I live with my father and mother. I am their only son. My mother is housewife and my father digs holes for wells.

I love keeping animals. My favourite animals are cats. I study in the Corporación de Educación Popular school which is run by a priest. Thanks to the school I got to know FairMail. This is a company that gives teenagers like me the opportunity to develop the talent for photography and see the world in a different way. I love being part of this group. I already feel very different as now I have more friends and I enjoy the classes taught by the volunteers. I also feel very proud of myself that I am making good use this opportunity instead of letting it go to waste. I entered at the end of December 2011 and I already feel like part of the family. It is a warm group where I am learning a lot. Not only about photography but also in the “motivational workshops”. To be honest I don’t have much more to say except thank you to god for giving me this opportunity. And I promise you that I will not let it go to waste. Now I am putting all my effort in taking a picture for my first postcards or even better, many postcards!

Gracias

Sandhya’s dream to become doctor still alive!

FairMail India photographer Sandhya doing her homework

FairMail India photographer Sandhya doing her homework

Hi, my name is Sandhya and I am working in FairMail India. It is my 3rd year in FairMail and I am very happy to be part of FairMail.

In the last (04-2011) I got 40,000 rs ( red. about 650 euro) as my part of the profit, for which I never thought. As I want to become a doctor now I think that the money for my education will not become a stumbling block for my future. And it is just because of FairMail because my parents would never do that for my study as they are very poor.
In my school also I am doing better as I am taking private tuition from my FairMail educational fund. And I am keeping myself positive for my dream. So I am thankful to FairMail that makes me motivated for my dream.

Record earnings for FairMail teenagers in 2011

Friday, February 10th, 2012

In a year where the word “crisis” was heard way too often FairMail’s teenage photographers in Peru en India proved that with creativity, hard work and having something unique to offer there are still big opportunities. For the fifth year in a row they managed to set a record regarding their earnings from their photography over the year. In 2011 the teenagers earned a total of 25.794 euro for their personal education-, housing- and medical funds! This way bringing their total earnings since the start of FairMail in 2006 to 74.594 euro.

Elmer Machuca Chacon

Elmer Machuca Chacon

The big earner in 2011 in Peru was 19 year old Elmer with a total of more then 10.000 soles (almost 3.000 euro), bringing his total career earnings to 7.654 euro. With this money Elmer is starting his 5 year career in communication sciences at the private UPAO university in Trujillo this March. In January the FairMail Peru team passed the 200.000 soles mark in overall earnings for the first time (almost 60.000 euro).

Sandhya Rao

Sandhya is still in secondary school and saving up for her career to become a doctor. FairMail India lost in the jungle?

First group meeting with the team

First group meeting with the team

Mid March FairMail initiator Peter den Hond went for a three week visit to FairMail india. Read below about his most marvelous day, how he helped to clear a path through the jungle and found Tibetian treasures hidden in the Himalayas.

After a 12 hour train journey I arrived in the holy city of Varanasi on the borders of the Ganges river. At the train station I was picked up by our managers Akshay and three of the FairMail photographers to take me to the new office of FairMail India. I felt straight away that there was a lot of good energy, fun and friendship between the team members. “Great to see, but if everything was already going so well in India, what was my role going to be here the coming weeks?”

Lost in the jungle?

Common goals set by FairMail team

Common goals set by FairMail team

During the last visit by Janneke in Octobre the whole team identified the collective goals of FairMailIndia (see picture). Earn money, Learn things, Help others, Get a profession and have fun together where the main goals. Since then the team is working hard on the succes of FairMail India. You can visualize it as if they are working hard every day chopping their way through the jungle in the direction of their goal. Then it is good if every now and then a foreigner comes in, climbs into the highest tree to look over the forest and see if we are still going in the right direction to reach our goal.

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

The teenagers aren’t used to openly criticize and evaluate their employer. But with some warming up we managed to get quiet a few examples of things going well or not going so well. And even a lot of ideas of how we can improve FairMail India! For example the kids where happy with the fact that money was actually being earned now  for their eduational and medical needs, but they where disappointed that of a few team members hardly any images where being selected. And according to them FairMail uniforms and ID cards would be a great improvement. (see picture). Now we all know which way we are heading the whole team is back to work together. clearing a path through the jungle again.

Tibetan treasures in the Himalayas

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

Besides the jungle we also went to the Himalayas. During the second FairMail India photography trip we travelled to the foot of the Indian Himalayas for 10 days. We went with 4 of the photographers, manager Akshay and travelling photographer Mr. Henk. We wanted to discover a new part of their country with the teenagers, get to know each other better and of course take great pictures for the new catalogue. In the north east of India there are many Buddhist influences from nearby Tibet and Bhutan. So perfect to take pictures of Buddha statues and Tibetan monks walking in the street.  Take a look at the new pictures the teenagers took and judge for yourself.

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

The promised view of the snow capped Himalaya stayed away for a long time due to the bad weather. For the teenagers who where used to warmer weather it was extremely cold at this altitude. They quickly had to buy glooves, scarves and hats to stay warm. Luckily our hotel had a nice fire place which they had never seen before! (see picture). Watch the small video about the trip by clicking here. We showed it during parent day to all the parents so they have an idea what we do to their kids when we take them away for 10 days!

A great (parent) day for Sandhya

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

For me the parent day we organized the last day was great because that way we could discuss the dreams the teenagers wanted to full fill with help of FairMail with their parents too. Despite their background/caste or financial situation. That was very inspiring to see for me! But I think the parent day was even more special for Sandhya. When we discussed the quarterly profit per teenager she learned that she had earned the crazy amount of 46.000 rupees with the sale of her cards in the last 3 months. (as a comparison the local fair trade liveable wage is set at 4.500 rupees per month. And Sandhya earns her money while taking free photography classes 10 hours per week, while her father has to try and repair rickshaws 48 hours per week!). Now FairMail India (like Peru) is starting to earn serious money we have to communicate more with the parents and their kids about finding ways to spend the money in an efficient and effective way. With local customs like arranged marriages, dowries and traditional gender relations this will become a nice challenge for the months to come. We already started “wishing” and discussing the “Creation Spiral” by writer Martinus Knoope.

Like last time the good bye bit was quick and hasty due to the full programme the last day. But that made the relaxation for me in the train back to Delhi all the better. A good chance for me to really feel that the coaching of local production units is the part of my work at FairMail that I enjoy most!

In the month of June two FairMail photographers (Elmer from Peru and Mariaflor from Peru) will visit Europe for a 3 week promotional tour. They will also conduct market research while visiting Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. On the road they will be visiting shops selling FairMail cards, tell their story to the buyers of fair trade shops, meet the director of their potential new French distributor and try to sell their cards at a consumer festival.

Two years ago David and Cinthia from Peru visited the Netherlands on a similar mission which turned out to be a great success! This time we are able to let the teenagers meet their customers and the other way around thanks to a subsidy from the Dutch ministry of economical affairs and our German distributor.

Peru trip report by FairMail founder Peter den Hond

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

In the end of December FairMail founder Peter den Hond left for a 3 week visit to FairMail Peru. Read all about his highs, his lows and his dilemmas:

69225 “For me the three weeks where filled with respect for the endurance of the teenagers, dilemmas about cultural differences and fun during the travelling and shooting pictures together. Experiences that recharged my “FairMail batteries” to get back to work on FairMail in the Netherlands.

Respect

One of the goals of the trip was like always to tell the teenagers who their cards are being received by consumers in the west. Only when they know which cards sell well and for what type of images there is a demand can they adapt their product to the wishes of the market. And of course that way earn more money!

Besides strengthening the ties with the teenagers is very important for me. During the rest of the year we always miss each other greatly and you feel that even more when you speak to each other again. I have heard many personal stories again. Like one of the girls who is being beaten by her step father and had to ask police protection. Or another teenager whoms irresponsible dad  hasn’t been sending money home to his family for a number of weeks. The family is now in debt just to buy food to eat. And the story about one of the ex-street children who now leaves in a boys home but is very worried about his mother because his family members at home are fighting alot. Sometimes even attacking each other with knives!

cinthia225Luckily there are also good stories. In December Patricia, Mariluz and Yuli finished secondary school and have started follow-up education. Cinthia actually graduated to become a tourist guide (click here for more pictures on her facebook!). She is the first FairMail teenager to finish a multiple year higher education! And Juan Carlos is doing his practical period in a pizzeria. We once started FairMail to break the chain of poverty, so the teenagers can later establish families in which their kids will have better oppertunities then they received from their own parents. The sale of their cards is important for that, but their own perseverence keeps being the source of it all. That is why my respect for them is so big. Even inspiring!

Dilemmas

Over the whole of 2010 the profit for the teenagers in Peru grew by 30% compared to 2009 to a total of 12.500 euro. That’s great, but it can always be better! Dat caused by biggest dilemma. With my western view of things, oriented at efficiency and keeping strict rules, I saw that FairMail Peru was doing well, but could do a lot better. Should I accept that things are less efficient compared to when we where still living in Peru? Or should we move back to the strict and efficient base we had when Janneke started FairMail in 2006? And in that case would we be able to get more out of the concept of FairMail? Or just ruin things created by our local team?

A good example is one of the teenagers who takes pretty good pictures and because of that has a reasonable income from FairMail and also importantly has a lot of joy by being part of the “FairMail family”. But he is often late for classes and sometimes behaves very irresponsibly with the camera we lend him. Our local manager doesn’t always correct him in a disciplinary way and thus FairMail is not providing this teenager with the possibly valuable work experience we would like to offer. Also with respect to personal guidance there is still a lot to improve so he spends his earnings efficiently and effectively in his plan for the future which he still doesn’t have.

PP225Fun

I could observe these kind of “problems” very well during the 9 day photography trip to the Peruvian Andes. During this great trip we worked really hard on new pictures for the 2011 Christmas Card collection (view the first results here). But we also got to know each other a lot better. For example during the 6 hour walk to a mountain lake at 4.620 meters where we literately had to drag each other to the top. (click here for more pictures on Facebook) Also the teenagers got to know new cultural aspects of their own country by staying with a local farmer family high in the mountains for 5 days. Especially when your parents can never take you on a holiday this is a great oppertunity for the kids to increase their world view.

llagunuco450

After three intense weeks of being together the hard and emotional good bye that followed was predictable. At least we could say “See you in July”. And to Elmer we could even say “See you in May” when he will be coming to Europe for a 3 week promotional tour for FairMail!

Mariaflor and her family

Mariaflor and her family

Hi my name is María flor Alvarado Reyes I an 20 years old and live with my mother, 2 brothers and sister in El Milagro.

I got to know FairMail through and NGO called ACJ (Asociación Cristiana de Jóvenes) and through this NGO I managed to enter FairMail.

For mi FairMail is a big opportunity in my life. Why? Because they taught me how to dream and set goals for my future. In FairMail I learned to love photography and learned to see the world through the eyes of a photographer. In FairMail I learned a lot about photography like: techniques, details, portraits and much more. With FairMail and the pictures that I take I have many opportunities as my postcards are sold and exported. The earnings go into a personal fund that each participant has. With this money I was able to improve my house, by doors and even build my own room. And the most important thing is that I was able to pay for my preparations for university.

The room Mariaflor built for herself

The room Mariaflor built for herself

During my time in FairMail we made many beautiful trips with the volunteers and foreigners. These trips are great. We share fun, smiles, fears, etc. And of course the most important: take picturs and that way have more postcards. Until now I still can’t beleive that with FairMail I was able to see the things differently (if you set a goal for yourself you can achieve it). I set as goal for myself to save my money that I earned in FairMail to go to university.

Mariaflor during classes

Mariaflor during classes

Ah, I forgot to mention that I entered the Cesar Vallejo University to study communication sciences. In the first trimester I feel very happy to be achieving my goals that I set a long time ago. In university I am taking many courses. Amongst them the course “audiovisual processes” where they taught me to work with film cameras, angles, movement etc. Now I am making a mini program with me colleagues. I thank god for having put FairMail in my life.

I also want to thank all the people that help us in one way or the other. And to FairMail both in Peru, India and soon in Morocco.  FairMail is expanding a lot. We are very happy to be achieving all of this. Thank you!
