PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2018 IS…

dimanche, décembre 30th, 2018

Désolé, cet article est seulement disponible en English.

Every year, FairMail recognizes one photographer who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty by naming him/her Photographer of the Year.

The election of the Photographer of the Year usually takes place on the last class of the year and it is done through anonymous voting. Every member of FairMail votes for the person that has best embodied the 5 core values of FairMail: motivation, responsibility, honesty, solidarity and punctuality.

This year the election was particularly exciting because we had a tie between Julissa and Medalit, two of the most experienced FairMail photographers. What eventually made the difference was the extra point that we give to the person who has collected the highest number of green points (merit points) throughout the year, and not surprisingly this extra point went to…Julissa!

It was clear to everyone how she distinguished herself not only for her great photography skills but also for her personality that makes her a natural leader and role model within FairMail. She is an enthusiastic photographer who is willing to take up more initiatives and accepts more of tasks apart from her regular class routine. She is not afraid of responsibility and her positive attitude has an impact on the whole team. For these and many other reasons we couldn’t agree more on the result of this year’s election.

Well done, Julissa!!

FairMail Photography Trip – Huaraz 2018

mardi, octobre 9th, 2018

January and August are without any doubt two special months for FairMail. We all look forward to these 2 months with anticipation because it’s when we leave the desert Peruvian coast behind and we embark on some crazy adventures on the Andes or in the jungle.

We spent the first week of August exploring the Ancash Region on the Peruvian Andes. FairMail photographers Paul, Melany, Julissa, Medalit and Gerardo went on the trip and we were also joined by a group of 5 travelers from Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

The Ancash region is home to some of the most breathtaking snow-capped Peruvian mountains that make up the Cordillera Blanca and it offers a strikingly varied scenery and we surely weren’t short of opportunities for fun!

We climbed up to 4300m, bathed in thermal baths, paid tribute to Mother Earth with the Pachamanca ceremony, learned about local culture and history, we took a lot of pictures and most importantly…we had a lot of fun!

We now hope that many of the pictures that the FairMail teenagers took will become cards soon!

“How do you make home-made pasta?” – Kzanier asked.

mardi, octobre 9th, 2018

In FairMail we do like to experiment, a lot. Be it with photography, craft, games or adventures. Trying out new things helps us step outside our comfort zone and gives us the chance to find out things that we love doing and realize our full potential.

Most of the times our extra-photography activities are carefully planned in advanced, some other times they happen at the spur of a moment like this one time when photographer Kzanier – out of nowhere – asked: “How do you make home-made pasta?” FairMail Italian director Federica just couldn’t leave the question unanswered and she improvised a pasta making workshop at the office. Not later than half an hour from the unexpected question, we were all standing at the table with our eggs and flour ready to learn.

Pasta making is a major Italian tradition that requires a set of skills like dosing the right amount of flour, kneading the dough, rolling and cutting it, not exactly a piece of cake for beginners! We were amazed by how committed the teenagers were and the results left us speechless. Despite the inevitable difference in texture, the noodles turned out just fine and we enjoyed them topped with an eggplant-carrot tomato sauce!

Christmas in FairMail

lundi, janvier 22nd, 2018

A very special Christmas in FairMail!

Christmas is all about sharing happiness with the people you love and that’s exactly what happened at the FairMail Christmas party in Huanchaco!

The day kicked off with a very interesting workshop on feedback held by our volunteer Jet. The teenagers learned how to give and receive feedback in a mature and constructive way, which is something that will prove to be particularly useful during photo sessions. The teenagers are now aware of the importance of listening and of phrasing the feedback in a way that doesn’t come out as offending.

In the second half of the morning, the teenagers were given a copy of the cards made with the pictures they took that are now currently for sale on the German and Dutch market.  This is a moment that everyone looks forward to. This is when they can physically touch the result of their hard work, efforts and creativity. Knowing that the cards are bought and appreciated by European customers is also an incredible boost for their self-esteem! At the same time, the newest members of FairMail are inspired by seeing their colleagues receiving their cards and this gives them further motivation to keep on working hard on new photo ideas. Last but not least, the fact that they receive a copy of the cards means that they will have something to show to a potential future employer.

After the distribution of the cards the party got into its full swing! Despite the hot temperature of the Peruvian summer, we enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate, a delicious Panetton from Mundo Pan (a local bakery owned by Mundo de Niños – the boy home from where we recruit our photographers) and chicken sandwiches made by Anidela and Angeles, our local managers.

When it comes to gift exchange, we found a good compromise between keeping the tradition of giving a little something to the people you love alive and avoid falling into unnecessary consumerism. In the previous class we all had drawn one name from a hat and that was the person we were supposed to give our present to. The feeling of anticipation and excitement was in the air as we unwrapped our presents. Everyone seemed to be very happy in the end with their presents…with the exception of F.C. Barcelona supporter Paul who got a photo frame with the colors of Real Madrid C.F., a tough one for him!

Before saying goodbye, the teenagers, were given a “Canasta Navideña”, as tradition dictates.  A bucket full of food products to bring home and enjoy with their families.

A simple but meaningful Christmas here in FairMail!

A great example of a teenager who is working well towards his goals is 17-year-old Kzanier from FairMail Peru. In September 2017 he started his second semester at the private ITN institute in Trujillo where he is studying a 3-year career in graphic design. With the Apple laptop he just bought from his FairMail money he is already better equipped than FairMail’s inhouse designer!

Getting up early

Kzanier started studying at the ITN in March 2017. It is regarded as one of the best private institutes in Northern Peru to study graphic design, with experienced teachers and up-to-date equipment. Combining his new studies with his classes at FairMail and his part-time job in a shoe shop, the first months weren’t easy for Kzanier. “What hit me most in the beginning was getting my schedule organised as I was also working. I also had to get up really early but now I am used to that” he explains.

Step by step

Kzanier is working very focussed on his future, taking one step at a time. He has it all worked out. With his FairMail earnings he already bought his own DSLR camera and is now saving up to buy different lenses he needs for his future work. He hopes to be able to combine working as a graphic designer with doing professional photography. He already did his first paid wedding photo shoot! With the MacBook he bought from his FairMail money he can edit his pictures and turn them into great looking designs.

Studying Marketing and International business afterwards

That way he hopes to have everything set up to earn a living. And pay for his marketing and international business study he hopes to continue after finishing at the ITN. Have a look at Kzanier’s cards here to see if you can give him a helping hand to get there. One step at a time.

Anayeli learning from veteran photographer Angeles

In August we welcomed 4 new teenagers to the FairMail team in Peru. This brings the total amount of teenagers financing their education through the sale of their pictures to 61. After Anidela and Diana retired earlier this year and with 2 boys turning 19 soon, it was time to look out for some new talent. Read more about how FairMail selects teenagers below.

Step 1: pre-selection

When we have vacancies, we inform our local partners who also work with at risk teenagers. In Peru these are an organisation that works with families who work on the garbage belt, a boy’s home for former street children and a school in a shanty town. As we already cooperate with them for many years their social workers and psychologists can suggest us potential candidates to enter FairMail.

This time we invited 2 girls who live in El Milagro (the part of Trujillo where the garbage dump is situated) for a 3-week trial period. Together with 2 boys from the Mundo de Niños boys home for former street children. Read more about Anayeli, Melany, Gerardo and Azabache on their personal profile pages.

Step 2: trial period

The 4 candidates get an official job interview to hear a bit more about their motivation and their personal situation. And to get a clear explanation about the trial period during which we will be evaluating them on FairMail’s 5 core values: Motivation, Honesty, Responsibility, Punctuality and Respect. Every week they get feedback on their behaviour so they can also find out if they like being in FairMail and want to give what it takes.

Step 3: signing the contracts

After the trial period the candidates are evaluated by the team, based again on our 5 core values. In this case 3 of the teenagers were approved and for one teenager we decided he needed one more month to prove his honesty. If the approved teenagers want to become a part of FairMail we explain them about the participation contract which states the teenager’s and FairMail’s rights and obligations. As the teenagers are still underage their parents also must sign.

Step 4: start earning money

With their participation contract they also sign their camera lending contract which means they can take their FairMail camera home from now on. And then it depends on their motivation (and a bit of luck) how long it takes before they get their first picture selected for a FairMail card. To start earning money with their pictures.

We wish Anayeli, Melany, Azabache and Geraldo all the best and hope to see their first FairMail cards soon!

Former FairMail India photographer Anil Rao

Former FairMail India photographer Anil Rao

Ever since FairMail India had to close its doors there has been less news about the teenagers who used to be part of the FairMail India team. But this time we have some huge news: Anil Rao managed to pass the entrance exam and get admitted to study chemistry, zoology and botany at the BHU University in Varanasi! Passing the entrance exam is normally already a huge achievement but Anil managed to do so with even bigger challenges in his personal life.

Anil’s father passes away

Anil entered FairMail India at the age of 14 and was always somewhat the professor of the group, aiming to become a big man as he called it by studying at the BHU university. Just before finishing high school his father passed away due to tuberculosis, leaving his family behind with Anil as the oldest son. At that moment, we were all terribly worried he would have to give up his academic aspirations in order to earn a living for his family. Luckily his mother managed to earn some money and Anil could work as assistant manager for FairMail India at the time.

Fighting tuberculosis

When FairMail India had to close his doors our partner Asha Deep employed Anil by making him responsible for the teenagers’ money withdrawals from their FairMail funds. Then tragedy struck again, this time his sister got TBC causing new stress and of course the fear the disease would continue to spread within the family. Eventually it did and Anil was also diagnosed with TBC.

After fighting the disease during more than a year Anil’s health improved and he could focus full force again on his study and prepare for the entrance exam with private tuition.

A dream comes true

With as result that Anil passed the entrance exam. On the 20th of July 2017, his dream came true and he will start his 3 year bachelor study at the public university, aiming at specializing in chemistry after 2 years. As it is a public university the costs of studying are quite low, so Anil hopes to save the earnings from the continued sale of his FairMail cards for his master’s study in the future.

It goes without saying that we are extremely proud of Anil and hope that his success is a source of inspiration for the other former FairMail teenagers in his surroundings.

Yuli at the moment of her graduation

Yuli at the moment of her graduation

11 years after FairMail started, former photographer Yuli (23, Peru) gave us the best birthday present of all by graduating from University.

An amazing achievement if you consider that as a little girl Yuli had to help her parents select stones and gravel at the quarry to help make ends meet after moving from the mountains to the big city. One generation later their daughter got a bachelor title in Languages from the highly ranked national university of Trujillo. And Yuli is not planning to stop right there.

An amazing path
Yuli entered FairMail in 2008 at the age of 15 years, after being scouted from the YMCA project that works with at risk teenagers near the Trujillo land-fill. Back then she was a very shy girl but it was already clear that she wanted to achieve more in life.

She reached her goal of passing the entrance exam for the National University on her second try in 2013, the same year she travelled to Europe for FairMail’s promotional tour. She soon got the hang of travelling, going to the United States for the past 2 winters to practice her English while working in resort hotels.

Read more about Yuli’s path on her personal profile page or in this video:

Next steps
Yuli wants to keep on studying to get a MSc. degree in Education. “I am checking to see if I can do my master degree in another country through a scholarship or something like that. I always believed that investing in education is the best step towards success” she says. No doubt that the income she keeps earning from the sale of her FairMail cards, on top of the 8.744 euro she already earned, will come in handy for that.

Yuli next to her very proud mother

Shining example
Yuli’s success is not only benefitting herself. She has also become a shining example for her surroundings. 2 of her brothers and sisters are now also in university. And during her 2 years as co-manager of FairMail Peru she inspired many of the current FairMail teenagers to believe in their own dreams. “I always told everyone that you have to do what you really like if you want to pick the fruits of your efforts.” Yuli says.

Wise lessons from Yuli
Yuli has more lessons for all of us: “I also believe that is very important to never disappoint the people that believe in you, that support you and that love you. It doesn’t matter what your goal in life is, what really matters is how much effort, dedication and affection you put into achieving it.

This way she shows great respect to her parents who greatly sacrificed themselves so their children could have a better future. And also making the best possible use of the assistance FairMail gives to underprivileged teenagers.

Mission possible: Paul et Dante en route pour devenir des stars du football

Paul and Dante with their new team mates

Paul and Dante with their new team mates

Remember the news about the “Mission Possible” project aimed at helping the FairMail teenagers identify and chase their own dreams?

Only a few months later, Paul and Dante have already achieved their goal by getting admitted into a soccer academy. Step one according to them to follow the steps of their soccer heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

Paul managed to get into a local soccer academy

True empowerment
The core of the Mission Possible project is that the teenagers have to come up with their OWN dreams and their OWN action plan with steps that THEY can take. It would probably seem a lot easier if FairMail took them by the hand to undertake the necessary actions. But real empowerment according to us is to guide them from one step behind, leaving all the action and decisions to them, and of course their parents.

Perhaps taking some wrong decisions along the way. But hey, you can only learn from your mistakes right? And if in the end they achieve their goals they can feel extra proud and generate even more self-esteem as the success was really thanks to their own efforts!

Dante’s dream is winning the golden ball

How to get to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona?

In the case of Paul and Dante their dream is to become a professional soccer player. That way they hope to be able to help their families and make them proud. Both love soccer and play every day with the other kids at the Mundo de Ninos boys’ home where they both live. To get to a higher level and possibly be scouted by professional soccer clubs they needed to enter a soccer academy. Which is not as easy as becoming member of a soccer club in Europe for example. Through their own effort and asking help from people around them, they got a chance to show their talent at FC Cantera in Trujillo. They apparently impressed their coaches as both got admitted!

Hopefully in the next newsletter we will have more news about other teenagers achieving their Mission Possible. Stay tuned.

New Video on how FairMail empowers; according to the teenagers

mercredi, juillet 12th, 2017

There are already many videos online showing what FairMail does on our YouTube channel. What was still missing was a video where the teenagers themselves explain what a day in the office looks like, what FairMail means to them and what they have gotten out of it.

In this video you can learn it all and more, in their own words.
