Betty from FairMail Peru

Betty from FairMail Peru

Last week we received a message from one of our Peruvian photographers: Betty. Because of domestic problems she had to leave her house with her mother, sister and two brothers. Despite that though she is determined to bring the new beginning to a good end. This is the translation of her message:

Hello friends, my name is Betty.

I live in El Milagro (name of the outscirts of Tujillo where the cities garbage belt is situated) with my mother, sister and two brothers. Due to domestic problems my mother had to get seperated from my father. Now we only live with my mother. I am 17 years old and member of the asociación de jóvenes cristianos del Perú (ACJ red. Peruvian version of the YMCA).

Well, my family and I have always worked on the garbage belt to find materials which we could recycle and which I would have to sell. I was totally fed up with this work. When I participated in a ACJ workshop I heard people talk about an interesting company called FairMail. Unfortunately I did not know how you could get a job there, but I knew that one day I would succeed.

By now I am working for FairMail for almost 2 years. Itis cool because we work together like brothers and sisters. I am using the money I earned with my card sale to pay for things to finish my secondary school and for the admission acadamy I am studying in now. I want to take the exam to get admitted to the National University of Trujillo where I want to study communication sciences. I am happy with FairMail and that this way I was able to pay for my own study. And not have to be a burden for my parents now that they don’t have the money to support me in this.

Right now I am living with my mother, brothers and sister in the house of my grandma. There we built a little room for ourselfves out of reed mats so we have a place to sleep. I know that with the sale of my cards I will make progress in life and acheive the goals I have in mind for me and my family. So we can all live in happines.

Thanks to everyone. I invite you to buy the cards of FairMail India and FairMail Peru. I hope there are some cards that you wil like.

Thanks, Betty Chanta

First group meeting with the team

First group meeting with the team

Mid March FairMail initiator Peter den Hond went for a three week visit to FairMail india. Read below about his most marvelous day, how he helped to clear a path through the jungle and found Tibetian treasures hidden in the Himalayas.

After a 12 hour train journey I arrived in the holy city of Varanasi on the borders of the Ganges river. At the train station I was picked up by our managers Akshay and three of the FairMail photographers to take me to the new office of FairMail India. I felt straight away that there was a lot of good energy, fun and friendship between the team members. «Great to see, but if everything was already going so well in India, what was my role going to be here the coming weeks?»

Lost in the jungle?

Common goals set by FairMail team

Common goals set by FairMail team

During the last visit by Janneke in Octobre the whole team identified the collective goals of FairMailIndia (see picture). Earn money, Learn things, Help others, Get a profession and have fun together where the main goals. Since then the team is working hard on the succes of FairMail India. You can visualize it as if they are working hard every day chopping their way through the jungle in the direction of their goal. Then it is good if every now and then a foreigner comes in, climbs into the highest tree to look over the forest and see if we are still going in the right direction to reach our goal.

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

The teenagers aren’t used to openly criticize and evaluate their employer. But with some warming up we managed to get quiet a few examples of things going well or not going so well. And even a lot of ideas of how we can improve FairMail India! For example the kids where happy with the fact that money was actually being earned now for their eduational and medical needs, but they where disappointed that of a few team members hardly any images where being selected. And according to them FairMail uniforms and ID cards would be a great improvement. (see picture). Now we all know which way we are heading the whole team is back to work together. clearing a path through the jungle again.

Tibetan treasures in the Himalayas

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

Besides the jungle we also went to the Himalayas. During the second FairMail India photography trip we travelled to the foot of the Indian Himalayas for 10 days. We went with 4 of the photographers, manager Akshay and travelling photographer Mr. Henk. We wanted to discover a new part of their country with the teenagers, get to know each other better and of course take great pictures for the new catalogue. In the north east of India there are many Buddhist influences from nearby Tibet and Bhutan. So perfect to take pictures of Buddha statues and Tibetan monks walking in the street. Take a look at the new pictures the teenagers took and judge for yourself.

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

The promised view of the snow capped Himalaya stayed away for a long time due to the bad weather. For the teenagers who where used to warmer weather it was extremely cold at this altitude. They quickly had to buy glooves, scarves and hats to stay warm. Luckily our hotel had a nice fire place which they had never seen before! (see picture). Watch the small video about the trip by clicking here. We showed it during parent day to all the parents so they have an idea what we do to their kids when we take them away for 10 days!

A great (parent) day for Sandhya

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

For me the parent day we organized the last day was great because that way we could discuss the dreams the teenagers wanted to full fill with help of FairMail with their parents too. Despite their background/caste or financial situation. That was very inspiring to see for me! But I think the parent day was even more special for Sandhya. When we discussed the quarterly profit per teenager she learned that she had earned the crazy amount of 46.000 rupees with the sale of her cards in the last 3 months. (as a comparison the local fair trade liveable wage is set at 4.500 rupees per month. And Sandhya earns her money while taking free photography classes 10 hours per week, while her father has to try and repair rickshaws 48 hours per week!). Now FairMail India (like Peru) is starting to earn serious money we have to communicate more with the parents and their kids about finding ways to spend the money in an efficient and effective way. With local customs like arranged marriages, dowries and traditional gender relations this will become a nice challenge for the months to come. We already started «wishing» and discussing the «Creation Spiral» by writer Martinus Knoope.

Like last time the good bye bit was quick and hasty due to the full programme the last day. But that made the relaxation for me in the train back to Delhi all the better. A good chance for me to really feel that the coaching of local production units is the part of my work at FairMail that I enjoy most!

Mariaflor and her family

Mariaflor and her family

The first FairMail teenagers, including Cinthia

The first FairMail teenagers, including Cinthia

Cinthia's graduation as tourist guide

Cinthia's graduation as tourist guide

Cinthia's new own bedroom

Anshu with FairMail volunteer Elaine

Anshu with FairMail volunteer Elaine

Namaste! Hello! I am Anshu, I am one of the teenagers in FairMail India. I am so happy to be in FairMail because I can learn lots of new skills, have fun and also earn some money (FM: 1.292 euro so far). I would not have had the chance to earn some money for myself if I wasn’t in FairMail India. Now I am very happy because during the last quarter I have earned the most profit of all of the FairMail India teenagers with the sales of my cards and that has made my family very proud of me!

Anshu with her family in front of her house

Anshu with her family in front of her house

My family is very big. There are 12 people so the money I make will help us a lot. I have already bought a big storage cupboard for my house so now we have more space for my family. The rest of my money is saved for my education in the future. One day I hope I will be a doctor. I want to help people and care for people who are sick. I will have to go to University first and that is very expensive. If I didn’t have my savings from FairMail I would never be able to go to university and become a doctor. So I am very happy that FairMail has given me this chance for my future.

I really like to learn photography. I like to take photographs of flowers the most. I like the flowers in the park because there are so many different colours to take photographs of and I think that people like to buy cards with nice flowers.

I love to see new places too. Last year I went to the photography trip with FairMail to Darjeeling. I liked to see the new places and the scenery and I made some nice photographs there. One day I would like to see some more places in India like Mumbai and Delhi and make some more nice photographs. Maybe when I am a doctor I can buy my own camera!

I want to say thank you to everyone who buys a card from me and from the other FairMail teenagers.

Namaste.

Akash with his family

Akash with his family

Hi, I am Akash Ram, one of the Photographers of FairMail India. I am 18 years old. It is my third year in FairMail India and I have improved a lot in my photography and also in my study. I left my school in my childhood and I started to learn to become a motor mechanic so I did not think about my study.

When I joined FairMail I was inspired to take a private tuition so I stared going there. In the first few months I did not like it because I knew nothing and I was grown up boy so I felt embarrassed to go there. But because of FairMail I kept doing my study and now I know many basic things like reading, writing and doing maths. Now I plan to write my high school exam next year so I am very thankful to FairMail.

Akash with his tutor

Akash with his tutor

Through FairMail I learn many things in photography and I take good pictures. And there are my cards too so with that I earn good amount of money (red.: 1.200 Euro so far). Some of my money I was able to invest in my business to improve my motor mechanic shop which is getting better and I have saved some of my profit fund for my future study.

So thanks to the FairMail India team and also those who are involve with FairMail and also those who buy our cards.

Many greetings
Akash Ram

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Mid July Peter den Hond and Janneke Smeulders went to Peru for a 4 week visit to the first FairMail unit they founded in 2006. Peter tells us about what they encountered.

“Visiting FairMail Peru is always an energizing experience for us. After all it is where it all started and the beginning of the wonderful flow experience we are now in with FairMail. Also the place we lived for 4 years still means a lot to us, just like the many friends we still have there. Of course especially the teenagers and managers of FairMail Peru!»

“The good thing about the first encounters is hearing about how the kids and their families are doing. And what their plans are. For example from 3 kids we heard that they where about to start university and 2 of them told us how much they liked their cooking classes. Unfortunately there was also one teenager who pulled out of prep school due to problems at home. And we where shocked to hear about another ex-FairMail participant who is wanted by the Peruvian police for extortion and another who was caught for armed assault! It makes you realize again just how difficult the environments are where our teenagers come from. And that these environments and «friends» sometimes have a lot of force to pull them back in. Despite the perspectives FairMail tries to provide them.»

Yuli, Betty and Patricia trying out their new cameras.

Yuli, Betty and Patricia trying out their new cameras.

“The goal of the visit this time was also to introduce a new policy called «Mi camera Propia” (Spanish for “My Own Camera”). The goal was to increase the quality of the cameras the teenagers currently borrow from FairMail. The use of better and more expensive camera’s means the teenagers have to learn to manage an even bigger responsibility. So only the ones that wanted to got the chance to invest their earnings in a new camera. FairMail provided support by paying for 25% of the purchase price and giving credit facilities to pay for the camera in 12 months. After that period the teenagers become owners of their own camera which means they can keep using it after they leave FairMail at the age of 19. This perspective and the fact that they are paying for the cameras themselves we hope will stimulate the teenagers to treat their new toys with great responsibility. If successful the same policy will be implemented in India in March 2012.»

“Also we made a 7 day photography trip to Huamachuco. This time without any tourists but with the whole FairMail team. It proved to be a great team building experience. Besides taking pictures for the next card collection together we also talked about the importance of working as a team, sexual education and made plans for FairMail’s marketing in Peru.»

Kaushal in action

Kaushal in action

Hello… Namaste… I am Kaushal and I am a photographer at FairMail India.

I am 15 now and I joined FairMail two and a half years ago. Before that I didn’t know anything about cameras. First I wanted to learn a lot and try to take some nice photographs to earn some money and help my family, but now that I understand it more I have a dream to become a professional photographer and take many creative photographs all around the world. I have lots of creative ideas and sometimes I have to spend a long time on my picture until I am happy it is perfect. I have four more years to study at my school and then I hope I will be able to study a Bachelor of Fine Arts course at the University here in Varanasi and use my photography skills.

Kaushal with his family in front of his house

Kaushal with his family in front of his house

In my family I have only sister, my grandmother and my mother. My father died when I was at the age of ten so it was a big burden for my mother to care for me and my whole family. I did not have any hope in my life because of my families’ situation. But in February of 2009 I was been selected to work in FairMail India. There I learnt how to be creative by taking picture and I was also encouraged to think about a dream for my life so now my dream is to become a good photographer and become a psychologist. Now I am very positive that I can reach my goal.

From the sales of my first card at FairMail I was able to earn 5.000 Rupees and I used the money to build a second room at my house. I live with my sister, my mother and my grandmother and before I had the money we all lived in one room together, now there is a little more space for my family.

Kaushal with his new laptop

Kaushal with his new laptop

This year I bought a laptop for my study as I am in high school and for my sister to use. She has a job typing in Hindi but before we had the computer she had to walk far in the dark to another computer and I thought it was dangerous for her and I was always worried about her. Now I have bought my laptop she can type at home and earn some more money for our family. I never thought that I will ever own a laptop in my life but FairMail made my dream full fill. Now I am saving my FairMail money to pay for my University course and I will also finish the building of my house.

One day I hope I will be a very famous photographer and when I am I would like to say thank you to FairMail for teaching me and go to FairMail in Peru as a volunteer to teach more teenagers how to be good photographers. I hope you like my photographs.

I want to thank FairMail and also to all who buy cards of FairMail because this makes our dream full fill.

Greetings,

Kaushal Das
