A Covid-19 update from our community

domingo, octubre 18th, 2020

The past months have surely been among the most challenging times in the history of FairMail as a social enterprise, but most of all as a family.

Despite one of the earliest and strictest lockdowns in Latin America, the deep inequality of Peru’s health system, high levels of informal economic activity, and corruption have contributed to a massive loss of life and a severe economic crisis that will have repercussions for years ahead.

Daily reported cases fell in June and July to rise again in August to a point that a second lockdown was issued on August 29.
To comply with the restrictions imposed by the government FairMail stopped its activities for about 5 months and re-opened its doors in July and August. During the lockdown we maintained constant contact with the photographers and their families, and thanks to the generosity of many of you, we offered our support in the form of recurring donations of food and money throughout the quarantine.
Several family members of the photographers have contracted the virus and one of them has unfortunately passed away.

Going back to classes in the months of July and August required a complete readjustment in the way we carry out our photography sessions. The photographers were split into 3 small groups to limit exposure during classes, they came to the office with private cars instead of public transport, they always wore face masks and they disinfected every working station and object after use.

Despite the restrictions, the photographers have shown a great deal of enthusiasm, motivation and creativity and the result is an astounding collection of Christmas pictures that you can see here.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing work of our two local managers Angeles and Anidela, their great organizational and communication skills made it possible for FairMail to go through this harsh time.

Now we are back, and we really want to make up for all the time we have lost. We’re ready to create new memories and new fantastic pictures!

FairMail recruiting process – how does it work?

miércoles, enero 16th, 2019

Three new photographers have recently joined FairMail – you’ll get to know them soon! –  and one of the questions that we are most frequently asked is about the recruiting process. How does it work? Where do we take the photographers? How do we decide who enters FairMail? With this blog post we’ll walk you through the entire process to become a FairMail photographer.

Whenever one of the older photographers turn 19, they leave FairMail and therefore there is a vacancy to be filled. We normally work with 10 teenagers, although there are times when we have more and times when we have less.

We collaborate with local NGOs and associations that recommend us boys and girls that might fit well in FairMail: motivated, respectful and willing to learn. Having photography skills is not a requirement.

Once we have our choice of prospect photographers, we train them for a period of time that can range between one month and two. The training consists in free photography classes where they learn the basics of photography and they start familiarizing with their cameras.

At the end of the training period the prospect photographers take a theory and a practical test that help us realize how much they have learned. The result of test, combined with an assessment of their attitude and personality give us a clear picture of who can become a FairMail photographers.

When the decision is made, the new photographers, together with their families, are introduced to FairMail and they sign the contract that will rule their participation in FairMail. From this moment on, they embark on a journey of personal and professional growth that will hopefully help them become the adult they want to be.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2018 IS…

domingo, diciembre 30th, 2018

Disculpa, pero esta entrada está disponible sólo en English.

Every year, FairMail recognizes one photographer who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty by naming him/her Photographer of the Year.

The election of the Photographer of the Year usually takes place on the last class of the year and it is done through anonymous voting. Every member of FairMail votes for the person that has best embodied the 5 core values of FairMail: motivation, responsibility, honesty, solidarity and punctuality.

This year the election was particularly exciting because we had a tie between Julissa and Medalit, two of the most experienced FairMail photographers. What eventually made the difference was the extra point that we give to the person who has collected the highest number of green points (merit points) throughout the year, and not surprisingly this extra point went to…Julissa!

It was clear to everyone how she distinguished herself not only for her great photography skills but also for her personality that makes her a natural leader and role model within FairMail. She is an enthusiastic photographer who is willing to take up more initiatives and accepts more of tasks apart from her regular class routine. She is not afraid of responsibility and her positive attitude has an impact on the whole team. For these and many other reasons we couldn’t agree more on the result of this year’s election.

Well done, Julissa!!

(English) Ethical Secret Santa

martes, diciembre 18th, 2018

Disculpa, pero esta entrada está disponible sólo en English.

Christmas is around the corner and this year we decided to give a little twist to our Amigo Secreto (Secret Santa) gift-exchange tradition. Although in FairMail we have always tried to avoid the trap of consumerism, we realize that excessive consumption has a momentous impact on our planet, and to put it simply, we don’t like that. Way too often we end up spending money to buy things that we don’t need just because at Christmas you are kind of supposed to. For these and many other reasons, we decided to further simplify our Christmas by inspiring the teenagers with the ethical hierarchy of gift exchange.  Gifts can surely come in many forms, including the non-physical. Giving your time, sharing your skills, creating memories bring more value to both the giver and the receiver. By shifting the focus from material gifts to shared experiences we hope to see the teenagers bond and have a more meaningful Christmas.

Gabriel’s success story: from the streets to professional photographer

miércoles, octubre 10th, 2018

We are often asked what the teenagers do when they leave FairMail and how we keep track of their progress. This is the story of Gabriel, undoubtedly one FairMail’s most talented photographers. He was 14 years old when he joined FairMail, living in a local boy home. Last December Gabriel turned 19 and therefore left FairMail. What is he up to know? Let’s find out!

Gabriel, what are you doing at the moment?

I’m currently studying Communication at the University of UPAO in Trujillo. I am also a member of Runa Foto, a photo club in Trujillo. I love taking part in their photo workshops and excursions because it gives me the possibility to further improve my photo skills and it brings me closer to become a professional photographer. The Christian organization Luz de Vida is supporting me on a more personal level thought their personal development workshops.

What are your goals for the near/mid-term-future?

My main goal at the moment is to finish my studies and become a successful professional so that I can pursue my dreams and help other people do so. In the future, I would love to go on a trip to Mexico to train as a photographer and to learn more about the country and its culture. I would also like to visit the United States to share life stories with young Christian people. Last but not least, I would like to improve my housing conditions.

How has FairMail helped you grow and how is it supporting you now that you left?

FairMail supported me in multiple aspects of my life. In the first place, it has allowed me to develop as a photographer and as a person. In FairMail I have learnt how to make better decisions for my life and it has helped me achieve a cleared picture of my future. Secondly, thanks to FairMail I was able to pay for University and for English classes thanks to the money that I’ve earned (and I’m still earning) with the sales of my cards. Last but not least, FairMail gave me the opportunity to travel across Peru and create unforgettable memories with fellow photographers, travelers and volunteers from all over the world.

2017 Photographer of the Year

lunes, enero 22nd, 2018

As every year, the election of the Photographer of the Year is always awaited with tense anticipation. This is a reward that all the teenage photographers aspire to, but what does exactly mean being elected Photographer of the Year and how does the election work? And most importantly, who is 2017 Photographer of the Year? This blog post will walk you through all the steps to achieve this important acknowledgement and reveal the winner!

In FairMail we have a “red and green point” award system that is used both to decide which of the kids are going on the photography trips and to elect the Photographer of the Year. Every time a teenager stands out for doing something remarkable, like for example supporting one of his/her colleagues or giving an extra hand in the office, he or she get a green point. For the opposite reason, they get a red point every time they do not comply with one of the 5 values that we stand for in FairMail.

When a teenager gets a green or red point, the reasons behind this decision are openly stated during Saturday’s circulo social so that it is clear to everybody why the green or red point was given. At the end of the year we simply do the math subtracting the red points from the green points and the teenage who scores best is elected photographer of the year.

This year, for the first time in FairMail’s history, we had a draw! Gabriel and Paul got the same result and were both awarded Photographer of the Year 2017! This is no surprise, both have worked really hard and have always put a little extra effort during classes. Paul’s achievement is particularly important to him because being awarded Photographer of the Year was his goal for 2017.

From our contact page you can email Paul and Gabriel and personally congratulate on their achievement!

Los altos y bajos de los jóvenes fotógrafos de FairMail en el 2016

The beginning of the year is a good moment to look back at your highs and lows of the past year. And to make plans and set goals for the coming year. We asked the FairMail teenagers to put their thoughts on paper for us.

Paul for example has as goal to become photographer of the year for example and Diana hopes that after all the setbacks in 2016, 2017 will be a better year for her. Angelica hopes to get accepted to the national university and Anidela wrote about the worries she and her family had about the health of her mother.

You can read the teenagers’ stories on their personal profile pages. There you can also link to their Facebook, send them an email, see how much they have earned with the sale of their photographs and see the fair trade cards with their pictures on it.

Anidela: Fotógrafa del ano

FairMail Peru photographer Anidela

FairMail Peru photographer Anidela

In the beginning of February 19 year old Anidela was chosen as photographer of the year. During the annual election all FairMail members casted their vote for the teenager who represents FairMail’s values best according to them. In the end the majority decided that Anidela is the most motivated during classes, shows the most responsible behaviour, is always on time, honest and the most helpful towards the other team members.

The title “Photographer of the year” is a form of recognition, but also a signal for the others that Anidela’s example is to be followed. Not without a reason a few of the other teenagers have set as their goal for this year to become Anidela’s successor.

For Anidela it is already the third time she becomes photographer of the year. This time the election was held during her goodbye party. As she turned 19 years old in January she is now ready for her FairMail retirement. We will greatly miss her great example, but hope to see her back on the team soon. More news about that in the next newsletter….

Noticias sobre FairMail India, 2 años después de cerrar

miércoles, octubre 26th, 2016

This month it is 2 years ago that FairMail India had to close its doors after the chain of incidents that took place (read what happened here). Time for a short update on what has happened since.

Free on bail

The most important thing is that the FairMail team member who was put in prison for over 1 year is out of jail and back with his family. Only on bail though, as the accusations against him still haven’t been properly investigated for a judge to be able to cast a verdict. After the hard time in jail the ongoing uncertainty of the court case outcome continues to cast a shadow on his future plans, making it even more difficult to move on.

Staying in touch

As the court case is not closed yet it is still too dangerous for FairMail founders Peter and Janneke to visit India personally. We have stayed in touch through group and individual Skype calls, facebook messages and e-mail. And nearly weekly email contact with Asha Deep, the local school who is taking care of guiding the teenagers and paying them their share of the profit from the sale of their cards. One of FairMail’s former co-managers continues to work for Asha Deep to help with the money distribution and administration of the teenager’s education bills that we keep checking.

Money from card sale still coming in…

Over the past 2 years the Indian teenagers still earned 1.121.088 rupees (about 15.000 euro) with the sale of their cards and photos. As they haven’t been producing any new photographs, and our customers keep asking for new pictures for renewal of the FairMail spinners, their earnings are down nearly 50% compared to when they were still taking photographs for FairMail India.

… and providing structural improvements.

Despite not being able to continue in FairMail India until the retirement age of 19, all of the 9 teenagers that were participating in FairMail at the moment of closing have continued to pursue further education (8x) or got a decent job (1x). 4 of them finished high school this year. You care read more about each teenager on their updated profile pages.

No re-start of FairMail India?

Despite still earning money from the photographs they took over 2 years ago, all of the teenagers are still quite disappointed that FairMail India had to close its doors. They have also stated repeatedly that they hope that FairMail India will start up again in the future. However, we had to make clear that this is not possible for us. Although the fight between the two families seems to have calmed down, the family feud is not solved yet as this is a deep, generation long problem. We also feel that the mutual trust between some of the teenagers is broken, as well as our own trust in being able to understand and control the situation in case something similar will happen. Especially as we saw how the police case was totally corrupt and thus outside our influence. We do not want to take the risk of creating potential new tensions. This is why we decided to focus on just Peru.

Lessons Learnt

Looking back over the past 2 years it has been a bumpy ride. We were put in a situation we never intended to be in, forcing us to take decisions we hoped we would never have to take.

What we learnt is that in an honour culture as in India, family feuds and jealousy can lead to such deep frustrations that people choose to really harm each other. The danger of it should not be underestimated. This is not a reason to stop empowering teenagers to develop themselves though: development is change and change often goes hand in hand with some sort of conflict. Luckily, in our 10 years of FairMail we have mostly seen supportive people around the teenagers, people who are proud and happy to see the FairMail teenagers grow. Grow to become creative, young adults working on their own future while they keep on supporting the family they come from.

Since august FairMail Peru has a new kid on the block. Julissa (16) successfully fulfilled her trial period with FairMail and filled the empty spot left by retiring Angeles.

Just like Angeles we recruited Julissa from the local YMCA which works with families trying to make a living on the local garbage belt.

Julissa seems to be a fast learner as she scored her first FairMail Christmas card on Greetz and for our German card publisher in no time (available in FairMail’s webshop next month)!
