(English) Peru trip report by FairMail founder Peter den Hond

jeudi, décembre 8th, 2011

Désolé, cet article est seulement disponible en English, Nederlands et Español.

In the end of December FairMail founder Peter den Hond left for a 3 week visit to FairMail Peru. Read all about his highs, his lows and his dilemmas:

69225 “For me the three weeks where filled with respect for the endurance of the teenagers, dilemmas about cultural differences and fun during the travelling and shooting pictures together. Experiences that recharged my “FairMail batteries” to get back to work on FairMail in the Netherlands.

Respect

One of the goals of the trip was like always to tell the teenagers who their cards are being received by consumers in the west. Only when they know which cards sell well and for what type of images there is a demand can they adapt their product to the wishes of the market. And of course that way earn more money!

Besides strengthening the ties with the teenagers is very important for me. During the rest of the year we always miss each other greatly and you feel that even more when you speak to each other again. I have heard many personal stories again. Like one of the girls who is being beaten by her step father and had to ask police protection. Or another teenager whoms irresponsible dad  hasn’t been sending money home to his family for a number of weeks. The family is now in debt just to buy food to eat. And the story about one of the ex-street children who now leaves in a boys home but is very worried about his mother because his family members at home are fighting alot. Sometimes even attacking each other with knives!

cinthia225Luckily there are also good stories. In December Patricia, Mariluz and Yuli finished secondary school and have started follow-up education. Cinthia actually graduated to become a tourist guide (click here for more pictures on her facebook!). She is the first FairMail teenager to finish a multiple year higher education! And Juan Carlos is doing his practical period in a pizzeria. We once started FairMail to break the chain of poverty, so the teenagers can later establish families in which their kids will have better oppertunities then they received from their own parents. The sale of their cards is important for that, but their own perseverence keeps being the source of it all. That is why my respect for them is so big. Even inspiring!

Dilemmas

Over the whole of 2010 the profit for the teenagers in Peru grew by 30% compared to 2009 to a total of 12.500 euro. That’s great, but it can always be better! Dat caused by biggest dilemma. With my western view of things, oriented at efficiency and keeping strict rules, I saw that FairMail Peru was doing well, but could do a lot better. Should I accept that things are less efficient compared to when we where still living in Peru? Or should we move back to the strict and efficient base we had when Janneke started FairMail in 2006? And in that case would we be able to get more out of the concept of FairMail? Or just ruin things created by our local team?

A good example is one of the teenagers who takes pretty good pictures and because of that has a reasonable income from FairMail and also importantly has a lot of joy by being part of the « FairMail family ». But he is often late for classes and sometimes behaves very irresponsibly with the camera we lend him. Our local manager doesn’t always correct him in a disciplinary way and thus FairMail is not providing this teenager with the possibly valuable work experience we would like to offer. Also with respect to personal guidance there is still a lot to improve so he spends his earnings efficiently and effectively in his plan for the future which he still doesn’t have.

PP225Fun

I could observe these kind of “problems” very well during the 9 day photography trip to the Peruvian Andes. During this great trip we worked really hard on new pictures for the 2011 Christmas Card collection (view the first results here). But we also got to know each other a lot better. For example during the 6 hour walk to a mountain lake at 4.620 meters where we literately had to drag each other to the top. (click here for more pictures on Facebook) Also the teenagers got to know new cultural aspects of their own country by staying with a local farmer family high in the mountains for 5 days. Especially when your parents can never take you on a holiday this is a great oppertunity for the kids to increase their world view.

llagunuco450

After three intense weeks of being together the hard and emotional good bye that followed was predictable. At least we could say « See you in July ». And to Elmer we could even say « See you in May » when he will be coming to Europe for a 3 week promotional tour for FairMail!

Mariaflor and her family

Mariaflor and her family

Hi my name is María flor Alvarado Reyes I an 20 years old and live with my mother, 2 brothers and sister in El Milagro.

I got to know FairMail through and NGO called ACJ (Asociación Cristiana de Jóvenes) and through this NGO I managed to enter FairMail.

For mi FairMail is a big opportunity in my life. Why? Because they taught me how to dream and set goals for my future. In FairMail I learned to love photography and learned to see the world through the eyes of a photographer. In FairMail I learned a lot about photography like: techniques, details, portraits and much more. With FairMail and the pictures that I take I have many opportunities as my postcards are sold and exported. The earnings go into a personal fund that each participant has. With this money I was able to improve my house, by doors and even build my own room. And the most important thing is that I was able to pay for my preparations for university.

During my time in FairMail we made many beautiful trips with the volunteers and foreigners. These trips are great. We share fun, smiles, fears, etc. And of course the most important: take picturs and that way have more postcards. Until now I still can’t beleive that with FairMail I was able to see the things differently (if you set a goal for yourself you can achieve it). I set as goal for myself to save my money that I earned in FairMail to go to university.

Ah, I forgot to mention that I entered the Cesar Vallejo University to study communication sciences. In the first trimester I feel very happy to be achieving my goals that I set a long time ago. In university I am taking many courses. Amongst them the course « audiovisual processes » where they taught me to work with film cameras, angles, movement etc. Now I am making a mini program with me colleagues. I thank god for having put FairMail in my life.

I also want to thank all the people that help us in one way or the other. And to FairMail both in Peru, India and soon in Morocco.  FairMail is expanding a lot. We are very happy to be achieving all of this. Thank you!

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Good bye breakfast with the FairMail Peru team

Mid July Peter den Hond and Janneke Smeulders went to Peru for a 4 week visit to the first FairMail unit they founded in 2006. Peter tells us about what they encountered.

“Visiting FairMail Peru is always an energizing experience for us. After all it is where it all started and the beginning of the wonderful flow experience we are now in with FairMail. Also the place we lived for 4 years still means a lot to us, just like the many friends we still have there. Of course especially the teenagers and managers of FairMail Peru! »

“The good thing about the first encounters is hearing about how the kids and their families are doing. And what their plans are. For example from 3 kids we heard that they where about to start university and 2 of them told us how much they liked their cooking classes. Unfortunately there was also one teenager who pulled out of prep school due to problems at home. And we where shocked to hear about another ex-FairMail participant who is wanted by the Peruvian police for extortion and another who was caught for armed assault! It makes you realize again just how difficult the environments are where our teenagers come from. And that these environments and « friends » sometimes have a lot of force to pull them back in. Despite the perspectives FairMail tries to provide them. »

“The goal of the visit this time was also to introduce a new policy called « Mi camera Propia” (Spanish for “My Own Camera”). The goal was to increase the quality of the cameras the teenagers currently borrow from FairMail. The use of better and more expensive camera’s means the teenagers have to learn to manage an even bigger responsibility. So only the ones that wanted to got the chance to invest their earnings in a new camera. FairMail provided support by paying for 25% of the purchase price  and giving credit facilities to pay for the camera in 12 months. After that period the teenagers become owners of their own camera which means they can keep using it after they leave FairMail at the age of 19. This perspective and the fact that they are paying for the cameras themselves we hope will stimulate the teenagers to treat their new toys with great responsibility. If successful the same policy will be implemented in India in March 2012. »

“Also we made a 7 day photography trip to Huamachuco. This time without any tourists but with the whole FairMail team. It proved to be a great team building experience. Besides taking pictures for the next card collection together we also talked about the importance of working as a team, sexual education and made plans for FairMail’s marketing in Peru. »

Juan Carlos with his family in front of his parents house

Hi, my name is Juan Carlos Gonzales Cabellos and I am 17 years old. I was born in Paijan where I used to live with my parents, my mother Maria Cabellos and my father, Severino Gonzales and my brother William Gonzales Cabellos.

When I was still a child I used to sell sweets on the streets. I did that because my parents didn’t have enough money to send me to school. I started working on the street even though I knew it was dangerous, but I had to do it to help my family. After a while I met other children who also worked on the streets. That is how I learned about a boys home called “Mundo de Ninos” and that they help children that don’t have the money to move forward in life.

Juan Carlos with his new lap top in his bed room

And you know what? I managed to get in, get a roof over my head, a plate of food to eat and some love and affection. But the most important thing is the education the children receive here. Thanks to Mundo de Ninos I now go to school. I am in forth grade of secondary school and have already started to study too. And most important, I am no longer working in the streets.

I often heard about a small company called FairMail where my friends went to. I was very curious and always asking about it. And I liked it that they where working in photography. That seemed cool to me! Luckily it did remain only interest and I also managed to get into FairMail.

FairMail is now a small business that helps teenagers with little economic means through photography. We take pictures in different parts of Peru where after they are exported to other countries where they are sold. Half of the profit is for FairMail and the other half for the photographer. The photographers part is devided in our own health, clothing, housing and educationfunds.

Chef Juan Carlos ready for action!

Chef Juan Carlos ready for action!

Thanks to FairMail I managed to buy a laptop so I can practice graphic design. Also I was able to build a sturdy wall for my parents house as the old one was about to crumble. Because I really like cooking I am now studying to become chef at an institute called “COCINA DE LOS CHEFF” and I work in Huanchaco in a pizzeria called “MISQUI”. I am pizza maker and in the future I am hoping to become a great photographer and have my own restaurant.

It is something really bizar to dream about, but I know that if you set a goal for yourself you can make it become reality!

I hope you liked my story and keep supporting us by buying our postcards from FairMail Peru and FairMail India.

Thanks
Atte. Juan Carlos flores cabellos.

(English) Mariaflor puts roof on family house

vendredi, décembre 3rd, 2010

Désolé, cet article est seulement disponible en English, Nederlands et Español.

mariaflor200Great news from Mariaflor who managed to improve her families house with a real door and a sturdy roof out of her earnings from the sale of her FairMail cards. Ever since a new pub opened its doors a few doors down the block the old door made of recycled bits of steel no longer offered the necessary protection from invading drunks. Together with her mother and FairMail Peru’s manager they went to the hard ware store to by the necessary materials and contract a handy man. Now the job is finished and visitors to Mariaflor’s house can sit in a roofed living room in stead of an open air space between three mud brick walls.

The best thing of all is that Mariaflor was able to provide a serious contribution to her family. She is often arguing with her mother’s new boy friend who says she is wasting her time with FairMail and she should go find a « real » job in stead of continue studying. Now Mariaflor has contributed more to the housing of then the « family chief » who spends a big part of his earning drinking beer.  Yeah, girl power!

(English) Photographer Maria flor starts university

jeudi, décembre 2nd, 2010

Désolé, cet article est seulement disponible en English, Nederlands et Español.

We are very proud of Maria flor from FairMail Peru. Here she is with three of her friend with whom she finished pre-university year.

mariafloruni450

In January 2011 she will start her 4 year course in communication sciences. This acheivement didn’t come easily at all for Maria flor. With her family she is living next to the Trujillo prison where she ended up when she moved to the big city with her mother. Jobs weren’t easy to come by, so like many of the inhabitants of the « El Milagro » slum (which means the miracle in Spanish!) she ended up working on the garbage belt. With the collection of paper, tin, iron and glass they managed to earn just enough to get by. By now her mother had a new man. He and Mariaflor didn’t get along wel, but two brothers and a sister followed. With the help of ACJ (a community centre in El Milagro) and later FairMail she managed to finish secondary school last year.

Because the education tought at the public school in El Milagro is of low quality had to prepare herself last year before being able to aply for the prestigous Cesar Vallejo university in Trujillo. She also succeded in that. The only problem was she hadn’t earned enough money yet with her photography for FairMail to start. That’s why the last months she has been working as a waitress in the same restaurant her mother is working as a cook. Despite the horrible situation at home (her father can’t keep his hands to himself), Maria flor is determined to give her family better oppertunities then the ones she had. That is why we are so proud of her breaking the  circle of poverty! Of course we will be in touch with Maria flor and monitoring her university results.

Want to read more about Mariaflor, check her pictures or send her an e-mail to congratulate  her? Then click here.
