(Français) Uniting for Clean Shores: FairMail Joins UPN Students in Beach Cleaning Initiative

lunes, noviembre 13th, 2023

Disculpa, pero esta entrada está disponible sólo en Français.

In a powerful display of community collaboration, students from the Universidad Privada del Norte (UPN) took the lead in organizing a beach cleaning event yesterday to address the increasing presence of plastic waste along the northern Peruvian coastline, and FairMail was proud to stand alongside them in this impactful initiative.

What We Found

The FairMail photographers and the UPN students, combed through the sandy stretches, armed with gloves and bags, collecting an alarming amount of plastic waste. The litter included single-use plastics, discarded bottles, and remnants of packaging that, if left unchecked, could have found their way into the delicate marine ecosystem.

Peru’s Pacific coast faces a growing threat from ocean plastic pollution. The alarming statistics reveal the urgency of collective action: the ICUN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) estimates that approximately 14 million tons of plastic enter the world’s oceans each year, adversely affecting marine life, ecosystems, and human health. What’s wrost is that this number is expected to triple by 2040.

The Pacific coast of Peru, with its rich marine biodiversity, is particularly vulnerable to this crisis. The plastic waste found on our beaches is just a fraction of what lurks beneath the surface, posing severe threats to the marine life that calls these waters home.

FairMail’s Commitment to Sustainable Practices

At FairMail, we believe in the power of collective action to drive positive change. Joining forces with the UNP students in this beach cleaning event aligns with our commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. The simple act of cleaning the beach serves as a poignant reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and preserve our natural resources.

Stay tuned for more updates on our environmental initiatives and community engagement efforts. Let’s keep our beaches clean and our oceans thriving!

A Covid-19 update from our community

domingo, octubre 18th, 2020

The past months have surely been among the most challenging times in the history of FairMail as a social enterprise, but most of all as a family.

Despite one of the earliest and strictest lockdowns in Latin America, the deep inequality of Peru’s health system, high levels of informal economic activity, and corruption have contributed to a massive loss of life and a severe economic crisis that will have repercussions for years ahead.

Daily reported cases fell in June and July to rise again in August to a point that a second lockdown was issued on August 29.
To comply with the restrictions imposed by the government FairMail stopped its activities for about 5 months and re-opened its doors in July and August. During the lockdown we maintained constant contact with the photographers and their families, and thanks to the generosity of many of you, we offered our support in the form of recurring donations of food and money throughout the quarantine.
Several family members of the photographers have contracted the virus and one of them has unfortunately passed away.

Going back to classes in the months of July and August required a complete readjustment in the way we carry out our photography sessions. The photographers were split into 3 small groups to limit exposure during classes, they came to the office with private cars instead of public transport, they always wore face masks and they disinfected every working station and object after use.

Despite the restrictions, the photographers have shown a great deal of enthusiasm, motivation and creativity and the result is an astounding collection of Christmas pictures that you can see here.

None of this would have been possible without the amazing work of our two local managers Angeles and Anidela, their great organizational and communication skills made it possible for FairMail to go through this harsh time.

Now we are back, and we really want to make up for all the time we have lost. We’re ready to create new memories and new fantastic pictures!

When a pandemic hits the lower rungs of society

What FairMail is doing and how you can support FairMail teenagers’ families

It was clearly just a matter of time before COVID-19 spread to South America and Peru.
On Monday March 16, President Vizcarra has addressed the nation declaring the state of emergency and implementing a set of preventive measures to avoid the spread of the virus.
In line with the decisions taken by the government, FairMail classes have been suspended until April 26. The FairMail photographers are spending the quarantine at home with their families.
To fight boredom and create a sense of continuity with their normal class routine, we have tasked them with DIY projects and home photo sessions.

After almost a month in lock-down we couldn’t help but notice that if, on the one hand technology is bringing us together, nurturing a sense of global community and solidarity, on the other, the spread of a pandemic disease widens social and economic disparities.
Our limited but first-hand experience with the families of the FairMail teenagers is showing us that low income-families are the ones who are suffering, and will suffer, the greatest repercussions.
The parents of the FairMail teenagers either run small family businesses or are employed informally, which means that they live day by day and do not benefit from any state subsidies.
Because of the quarantine, they had to suspend all their activities, which, simply put, means no income for the weeks to come.

To support them in this critical time, FairMail is releasing emergency food funds to make sure that the families have enough to eat and it continues to release health funds to the photographers and their direct family members.

Since the beginning of lockdown, FairMail card sales have dropped dramatically as our main retail and online sale channels across Europe have been temporarily closed.

If you want to show your support to our teenagers and their families in this critical time, you can either purchase FairMail cards on our Web Shop, on Love from the Artist or make a donation (every little amount counts) directly to the food fund of the teenagers – contact us at info@fairmail.info.

If it is true, as they say, that you need to step back, before you leap forward, we want to live this time as a time to reconnect with each other and with the people we love, a time for new ideas to be born and for energies to be restored.
We’ll be back, as loud and creative as ever!

FairMail recruiting process – how does it work?

miércoles, enero 16th, 2019

Three new photographers have recently joined FairMail – you’ll get to know them soon! –  and one of the questions that we are most frequently asked is about the recruiting process. How does it work? Where do we take the photographers? How do we decide who enters FairMail? With this blog post we’ll walk you through the entire process to become a FairMail photographer.

Whenever one of the older photographers turn 19, they leave FairMail and therefore there is a vacancy to be filled. We normally work with 10 teenagers, although there are times when we have more and times when we have less.

We collaborate with local NGOs and associations that recommend us boys and girls that might fit well in FairMail: motivated, respectful and willing to learn. Having photography skills is not a requirement.

Once we have our choice of prospect photographers, we train them for a period of time that can range between one month and two. The training consists in free photography classes where they learn the basics of photography and they start familiarizing with their cameras.

At the end of the training period the prospect photographers take a theory and a practical test that help us realize how much they have learned. The result of test, combined with an assessment of their attitude and personality give us a clear picture of who can become a FairMail photographers.

When the decision is made, the new photographers, together with their families, are introduced to FairMail and they sign the contract that will rule their participation in FairMail. From this moment on, they embark on a journey of personal and professional growth that will hopefully help them become the adult they want to be.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2018 IS…

domingo, diciembre 30th, 2018

Disculpa, pero esta entrada está disponible sólo en English.

Every year, FairMail recognizes one photographer who has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty by naming him/her Photographer of the Year.

The election of the Photographer of the Year usually takes place on the last class of the year and it is done through anonymous voting. Every member of FairMail votes for the person that has best embodied the 5 core values of FairMail: motivation, responsibility, honesty, solidarity and punctuality.

This year the election was particularly exciting because we had a tie between Julissa and Medalit, two of the most experienced FairMail photographers. What eventually made the difference was the extra point that we give to the person who has collected the highest number of green points (merit points) throughout the year, and not surprisingly this extra point went to…Julissa!

It was clear to everyone how she distinguished herself not only for her great photography skills but also for her personality that makes her a natural leader and role model within FairMail. She is an enthusiastic photographer who is willing to take up more initiatives and accepts more of tasks apart from her regular class routine. She is not afraid of responsibility and her positive attitude has an impact on the whole team. For these and many other reasons we couldn’t agree more on the result of this year’s election.

Well done, Julissa!!

(English) Ethical Secret Santa

martes, diciembre 18th, 2018

Disculpa, pero esta entrada está disponible sólo en English.

Christmas is around the corner and this year we decided to give a little twist to our Amigo Secreto (Secret Santa) gift-exchange tradition. Although in FairMail we have always tried to avoid the trap of consumerism, we realize that excessive consumption has a momentous impact on our planet, and to put it simply, we don’t like that. Way too often we end up spending money to buy things that we don’t need just because at Christmas you are kind of supposed to. For these and many other reasons, we decided to further simplify our Christmas by inspiring the teenagers with the ethical hierarchy of gift exchange.  Gifts can surely come in many forms, including the non-physical. Giving your time, sharing your skills, creating memories bring more value to both the giver and the receiver. By shifting the focus from material gifts to shared experiences we hope to see the teenagers bond and have a more meaningful Christmas.

2017 Photographer of the Year

lunes, enero 22nd, 2018

As every year, the election of the Photographer of the Year is always awaited with tense anticipation. This is a reward that all the teenage photographers aspire to, but what does exactly mean being elected Photographer of the Year and how does the election work? And most importantly, who is 2017 Photographer of the Year? This blog post will walk you through all the steps to achieve this important acknowledgement and reveal the winner!

In FairMail we have a “red and green point” award system that is used both to decide which of the kids are going on the photography trips and to elect the Photographer of the Year. Every time a teenager stands out for doing something remarkable, like for example supporting one of his/her colleagues or giving an extra hand in the office, he or she get a green point. For the opposite reason, they get a red point every time they do not comply with one of the 5 values that we stand for in FairMail.

When a teenager gets a green or red point, the reasons behind this decision are openly stated during Saturday’s circulo social so that it is clear to everybody why the green or red point was given. At the end of the year we simply do the math subtracting the red points from the green points and the teenage who scores best is elected photographer of the year.

This year, for the first time in FairMail’s history, we had a draw! Gabriel and Paul got the same result and were both awarded Photographer of the Year 2017! This is no surprise, both have worked really hard and have always put a little extra effort during classes. Paul’s achievement is particularly important to him because being awarded Photographer of the Year was his goal for 2017.

From our contact page you can email Paul and Gabriel and personally congratulate on their achievement!

Christmas in FairMail

lunes, enero 22nd, 2018

A very special Christmas in FairMail!

Christmas is all about sharing happiness with the people you love and that’s exactly what happened at the FairMail Christmas party in Huanchaco!

The day kicked off with a very interesting workshop on feedback held by our volunteer Jet. The teenagers learned how to give and receive feedback in a mature and constructive way, which is something that will prove to be particularly useful during photo sessions. The teenagers are now aware of the importance of listening and of phrasing the feedback in a way that doesn’t come out as offending.

In the second half of the morning, the teenagers were given a copy of the cards made with the pictures they took that are now currently for sale on the German and Dutch market.  This is a moment that everyone looks forward to. This is when they can physically touch the result of their hard work, efforts and creativity. Knowing that the cards are bought and appreciated by European customers is also an incredible boost for their self-esteem! At the same time, the newest members of FairMail are inspired by seeing their colleagues receiving their cards and this gives them further motivation to keep on working hard on new photo ideas. Last but not least, the fact that they receive a copy of the cards means that they will have something to show to a potential future employer.

After the distribution of the cards the party got into its full swing! Despite the hot temperature of the Peruvian summer, we enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate, a delicious Panetton from Mundo Pan (a local bakery owned by Mundo de Niños – the boy home from where we recruit our photographers) and chicken sandwiches made by Anidela and Angeles, our local managers.

When it comes to gift exchange, we found a good compromise between keeping the tradition of giving a little something to the people you love alive and avoid falling into unnecessary consumerism. In the previous class we all had drawn one name from a hat and that was the person we were supposed to give our present to. The feeling of anticipation and excitement was in the air as we unwrapped our presents. Everyone seemed to be very happy in the end with their presents…with the exception of F.C. Barcelona supporter Paul who got a photo frame with the colors of Real Madrid C.F., a tough one for him!

Before saying goodbye, the teenagers, were given a “Canasta Navideña”, as tradition dictates.  A bucket full of food products to bring home and enjoy with their families.

A simple but meaningful Christmas here in FairMail!
