The success story of ex-FairMail photographer Patricia from Peru continues. In past newsletters you could read about how she started her own bakery with fellow ex-photographer Betty and how they managed to attract foreign investment in their growing business.

Despite the setback of her partner Betty leaving the business to pursue other destinies Patricia is doing great. In the end of 2013 she won the first prize of a business competition organized by the Peruvian government. The competition was aimed at stimulating young entrepreneurs to set up their own business. After the training sessions Patricia managed to convince the judges during the pitching session to give her the first prize of 2.500 Peruvian soles (about 650 euro).

With this money she bought a new oven and is now refurbishing her mother’s house to make it suitable to house the bakery’s facilities. This way she will become independent from the facilities she now rents from ACJ El Milagro and will spend less time commuting. Also at home Patricia’s mother and sisters can help baking the products.

Apart from the investment in her new facilities she has also managed to expand her product range including more sweets like meringues, cookies, “crema de leche” and “cocitos”. Also she has managed to formalize her business with the tax authorities, making the way free to sell (and invoice) to corporate clients.

Patricia and Betty, two of FairMail Peru’s ex-photographers, where very sad when they had to retire from FairMail 9 months ago. But at the same time very happy to make their dream reality: start-up theirown micro-enterprise called PatyBet Bakery (read the earlier blogpost about their plans here). Twelve months down the road they have shown that their business is successful. Also in attracting foreign investment from a Dutch micro-investor, wanting to help their business grow.

The investment was used to buy flower, sugar and butter at discounted wholesale prices but also different cake molds to increase production, cleaning materials and other ingredients necessary for baking cakes.

Now the PatyBet bakery has increased its production to about 20 to 23 cakes per week. Their clients seem to be very satisfied with the tasty product and the service provided. All the cakes leave the oven still hot and are delivered straight into the hands of their customers.

Two of the Peruvian FairMail teenagers who left FairMail at the end of 2012 (due to reaching the age limit) have started on a new endeavor: starting a bakery business together.Patricia used her FairMail earnings to study gastronomy and with the help of one of FairMail’s partners ACJ she also followed a bakery course. Betty used her earnings to study business administration. With Patricia’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit and Betty’s structured way of working and understanding of finances they could be the perfect match. We asked them how they came up with the idea and what they are up to:

How did you get the idea to start a cake bakery business?

Patty explains: “At first I wanted to start a restaurant in our home where all the mothers from the neighborhood could come and eat. But we didn’t have enough money to invest so we started selling snacks. Unfortunately that didn’t go very well. I also made cakes for me and my family now and then. The neighbors who would join us said the cakes where delicious and asked why we didn’t start to sell cakes. At home I have a small oven, but it is too small. But at a nearby NGO (ACJ El Milagro) they have a professional bakery kitchen and they let me use their oven. Also they helped me with a bakery course where I learned a lot of things which I am using now.

And how did you end up joining Betty?

Betty explains: “Patty asked me a long time ago if I wanted to help. She was looking for someone that could assist her, or would be her business partner. But at that time I had problems at home so I didn’t say yes then. But now I have decided to join her and now we do everything 50/50.

So what is the name of your company?

We don’t know yet unfortunately. All ideas are welcome!

How is business going for you now?

At this moment we are baking about 10 cakes per week. We sell them at 10 soles (about 3 euro) while they cost us around 5 soles to make. It is a lot of work because we make the batter by hand. First we bought small amounts of ingredients, but now we have invested in buying a big bag of flower and sugar so the production price goes down and we make more profit. We also want to buy more cake molds as now we have only 4. We want to grow so we hope that everyone in the neighborhood knows about us soon and orders with us!

Even though Patricia and Betty are no longer active as photographers for FairMail they keep earning money with the sale of their cards and photo’s. Over the coming months they will invest their earnings in their business. We wish Patricia and Betty all the best with their new endeavor and many more cakes to come!

In September FairMail Peru photographer Patricia Mariseta will turn 19 years old and therefor retire as an active photographer for FairMail. Of course she will be earning money with her pictures FairMail will keep trying to sell for her. Time to look back with her on the past four years she has been participating in FairMail and ask her how she sees her life as a retired FairMail photographer.

What do you like most about FairMail?

“What I like most is the teamwork which we always do. I like to share new ideas and challenges with my friends at FairMail. Also because they give suggestions and constructive ideas to me.”

What was the most beautiful moment in FairMail for you?
“The most beautiful moment was when I joined the group because in FairMail I found new challenges and new goals. But also unforgettable travel memories that I will never forget, friends that will always be there to support me and a family in which I can count on today and in the future.”

Were people around you ever jealous of you being in FairMail? And if so how did you react?
“Yes, there were friends who told me I was lucky and came up to tell me that they wanted to enter, but I told them there where only a limited amount of spaces in FairMail. When my friends talked in a jealous way about FairMail I just smiled and said: thank you God for letting me know about FairMail, meet new friends and have new dreams.”

What have you learned in FairMail, besides photography?
“I learned that life is not easy. It has many obstacles. But I also learned that I am a girl with dreams and goals. I can achieve what I want as long as I put much effort and strength into it. I learned to develop myself as a person and have values. That is the most important.”

What will you spend your time on when you leave FairMail?
“When I leave FairMail, I will devote my time on starting my own business. Either a restaurant or a little corner store. It will start as my own small business and of course it will grow little by little.”

What are your long term future plans?
“My long term plan is to organize events like weddings and get to travel everywhere. But first I will have to achieve my goal of having my own restaurant and making it well known and established.”

What you still need to make your dreams become reality?
“I need to learn more about the business of organizing events so I can continue to work on achieving my goal.”
