From Mud to Money

The building site of FairMail’s future office in the Casi Casa complex already proved useful as background for a tailor made card order from one of our corporate customers.

The Dutch eco-building company “Building Traditions” asked our teenagers to come up with an image transmitting the company’s values: diversity, sustainability and cooperation. As Building Traditions offers eco-friendly mud built housing solutions to its clients the FairMail teenagers needed a nice and quiet place with a lot of mud to work on their ideas!

After drawing their ideas on paper and presenting it to their fellow team members they got to work, often inviting little brother, sisters and neighbours as models for their fair trade photographs. Besides using Casi Casa as photography set the kids also took pictures at local archaeological sites (the world’s largest mud city Chan Chan), at a mud brick factory and in their own neighbourhoods.

In the end 18 year old Angeles shot the winning image of her niece playing with mud in the street where they live. Christo, Building Traditions director, choose this fair trade image for their corporate card to send to their customers and relations. Angeles received 60% of the profit FairMail made to invest in her own education. Money that  was very welcome as she is currently preparing for the university entrance exam to study Social Work.

Schools in Peru closed early due to “El Nino”

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

In Peru the school year normally ends in December. However, this year the Peruvian government decided to speed things up with classes 6 days a week so they could already finish in November. This way the government hoped to finish the exams in time for the heavy “El Nino” rains that are expected to start in December. These would most likely mean that a large part of the students can’t make it to school for their final exams due to expected floodings.

During the last big “El Nino” in 1998 Huanchaco became isolated due to dry river beds turning into raging rivers, displacing many families who had nowhere else to build their homes. Fingers crossed this time it won’t be so devastating and that the preventive measures will prevent similar tragedies.

Although the final report cards aren’t in yet it seems that all of the current FairMail teenagers in Peru passed on to the next grade this year. Hurray! Even Dante who broke his right arm in a soccer match last month managed to finish primary school as he was allowed to do his final exams orally.

In the meantime, two high school graduates from earlier this year, Juan Gabriel and Maria de los Angeles, are preparing themselves for the big entry exam for the National University (UNT) in March next year. On average only the top 10% with the highest scores are allowed into the UNT.

As 17 year old Juan Gabriel finished high school studying only in the weekends he has a lot of catching up to do. With his part of the earnings from the sale of his FairMail cards he is now studying at the Kepler academy in Trujillo 6 days a week. Besides teaching him new subjects which he never learned before he also gets to practice a lot of old exams. Every week his test results are increasing so he seems to be on the right track for the March exam.

In the meantime, 18 year old Angeles is choosing a different route. Unfortunately, she didn’t get a high enough score in last March’s admission exam due to nerves. Therefore, this time she is studying at the CEPUNT institute. This is a very competitive institute which guarantees direct entry into the university for the students with the highest average marks after 3 partial exams. If she manages to finish in the top 8 of over 60 CEPUNT students who want to study social work like Angeles does she will enter the university directly. She finished in 18th place after the first partial exam, so Angeles still has a lot of work to do. Fingers crossed for her next partial exam coming Sunday.

Anidela and Angeles, the stars of the European tour

Anidela and Angeles, the stars of the European tour

In July two of FairMail’s teenage photographers toured Europe to tell the unique story behind their cards to as many people as possible. And to learn more about their card market. The tour was a big adventure for Anidela and Angeles who had never been in an airplane before. They were welcomed like stars in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Tour d'Europe

Tour d’Europe

During the 17 day tour they drove more than 3.000 kilometers. Amongst which 25 kilometers by bicycle. Something that left a lasting impression on them. Not only because they felt quite tired in the end, but also because they noticed how it helps clear and relax your mind. They were also impressed by how creative people in Europe decorate their houses and how well things are organised over here. And that there are many, many card spinners in the shops which their cards have to compete with.

Meeting their customers for the first time

In order to do so they made a PowerPoint presentation for their colleagues in Peru with the most important findings of their market research and suggestions to improve the offering for their customers.

Five new teenagers start trial period in Peru and India

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Due to different reasons there were 6 vacancies for teenage photographers to be filled in Peru and India. With the help of our local partners (Asha Deep School in India and CEPMundo de Niños and ACJ in Peru) we pre-selected 5 responsible teenagers who are motivated to go school but have economic difficulties to do so, for a trial period. During this period they will participate in all of FairMail activities and trainings, trying to show us that they are also motivated to work for FairMail. And that they will be able to make full use of the opportunity they are getting with the camera we borough to them.

The vacancies in Peru where created due to three teenagers reaching the age of 19 when they stop taking pictures for FairMail and start to concentrate on their (university) education or personal business with the money they earned so far. One teenager in Peru stopped attending FairMail classes regularly. When after several warnings he didn’t show up another time we were forced to terminate his participation.

In India the 2 vacancies where created due to motivational problems of 2 of the teenagers. After several conversations and warnings this convinced us that 2 other teenagers would be able to make better use of the opportunity that FairMail seeks to give to deprived but motivated teenagers. All the 6 teenagers who stopped participating in FairMail, regardless of the reason why they stopped, will keep earning 50% of the profits made to invest in their education and housing. But they won’t be able to submit new pictures to FairMail.
