Gabriel’s success story: from the streets to professional photographer

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

We are often asked what the teenagers do when they leave FairMail and how we keep track of their progress. This is the story of Gabriel, undoubtedly one of FairMail’s most talented photographers. He was 14 years old when he joined FairMail, living in a local boy home. Last December Gabriel turned 19 and therefore left FairMail. What is he up to know? Let’s find out!

Gabriel, what are you doing at the moment?

I’m currently studying Communication at the University of UPAO in Trujillo. I am also a member of Runa Foto, a photo club in Trujillo. I love taking part in their photo workshops and excursions because it gives me the possibility to further improve my photo skills and it brings me closer to become a professional photographer. The Christian organization Luz de Vida is supporting me on a more personal level thought their personal development workshops.

What are your goals for the near/mid-term-future?

My main goal at the moment is to finish my studies and become a successful professional so that I can pursue my dreams and help other people do so. In the future, I would love to go on a trip to Mexico to train as a photographer and to learn more about the country and its culture. I would also like to visit the United States to share life stories with young Christian people. Last but not least, I would like to improve my housing conditions.

How has FairMail helped you grow and how is it supporting you now that you left?

FairMail supported me in multiple aspects of my life. In the first place, it has allowed me to develop as a photographer and as a person. In FairMail I have learnt how to make better decisions for my life and it has helped me achieve a clearer picture of my future. Secondly, thanks to FairMail I was able to pay for University and for English classes thanks to the money that I’ve earned (and I’m still earning) with the sales of my cards. Last but not least, FairMail gave me the opportunity to travel across Peru and create unforgettable memories with fellow photographers, travelers and volunteers from all over the world.

The great thing about the FairMail cards is that you can see on the back of each card who you are supporting directly with your purchase. Each FairMail teenager has his or her own story about dreams, hardships, passions and getting ahead in life.

We have now updated the personal profile pages of our current photographers in Peru with 9 new recorded video updates. You can view all of them below or on each teenager’s personal profile page.

Juan Gabriel’s impact accelerator: Paying-it-forward

Imagine what would happen to the world if all people who benefit from a good deed by others, do a similar fevour to 3 others instead of repaying the original benefactor.

Just like in the “Pay it forward” movie, FairMail Peru photographer and former street child Juan Gabriel (17) decided to make use of the skills he learned at FairMail to support a Peruvian charity supporting children with Down syndrome.

Paying-it-forward

Juan Gabriel submitted this yoga picture of his for the 2016 Devayani Children’s Yoga calendar. With the sale of the calendar Juan Gabriel’s picture earned 192 euro which he decided to donate to Proyecto Yannick. Proyecto Yannick helps children with Down syndrome and their parents in Celendín, Peru by providing information, education and medical assistance.

Schools in Peru closed early due to “El Nino”

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

In Peru the school year normally ends in December. However, this year the Peruvian government decided to speed things up with classes 6 days a week so they could already finish in November. This way the government hoped to finish the exams in time for the heavy “El Nino” rains that are expected to start in December. These would most likely mean that a large part of the students can’t make it to school for their final exams due to expected floodings.

During the last big “El Nino” in 1998 Huanchaco became isolated due to dry river beds turning into raging rivers, displacing many families who had nowhere else to build their homes. Fingers crossed this time it won’t be so devastating and that the preventive measures will prevent similar tragedies.

Although the final report cards aren’t in yet it seems that all of the current FairMail teenagers in Peru passed on to the next grade this year. Hurray! Even Dante who broke his right arm in a soccer match last month managed to finish primary school as he was allowed to do his final exams orally.

In the meantime, two high school graduates from earlier this year, Juan Gabriel and Maria de los Angeles, are preparing themselves for the big entry exam for the National University (UNT) in March next year. On average only the top 10% with the highest scores are allowed into the UNT.

As 17 year old Juan Gabriel finished high school studying only in the weekends he has a lot of catching up to do. With his part of the earnings from the sale of his FairMail cards he is now studying at the Kepler academy in Trujillo 6 days a week. Besides teaching him new subjects which he never learned before he also gets to practice a lot of old exams. Every week his test results are increasing so he seems to be on the right track for the March exam.

In the meantime, 18 year old Angeles is choosing a different route. Unfortunately, she didn’t get a high enough score in last March’s admission exam due to nerves. Therefore, this time she is studying at the CEPUNT institute. This is a very competitive institute which guarantees direct entry into the university for the students with the highest average marks after 3 partial exams. If she manages to finish in the top 8 of over 60 CEPUNT students who want to study social work like Angeles does she will enter the university directly. She finished in 18th place after the first partial exam, so Angeles still has a lot of work to do. Fingers crossed for her next partial exam coming Sunday.

New “Magic Cards” take personalization to a next level

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

At FairMail innovation doesn’t stop with making greeting cards a tool for keeping at risk teenagers on the right track. We also innovate our cards and since this week we offer a card that makes your message to your loved ones even more personal. In cooperation with Greetz we developed 3 FairMail Magic Cards on which you can personalize your card in an extra special way before it is sent off by post. Go on and have a try!

For example with this first image you can add the names of the couple that is about to get married as if their names were actually embroiled in the felt hearts, photographed by 15 year old Kzanier from Peru.

With this second image you can add the name of the birthday boy or girl on the tag of this birthday cake as if it was already written on it when 18 year old Anidela took the picture.

And with this third image you can write a message on the back of these relaxing beach chairs as if it were actually painted on the textile when 16 year old Juan Gabriel gave it his best shot.

Try it and you will see why we call them Magic Cards.

After finishing the design of your card, Greetz takes care of printing it and sending it off for you. You can even include flowers, fair trade chocolate or balloons with your card.

Just like with an ordinary FairMail card you can see the name, age and e-mail of the teenager who took the picture on the inside of the card. Plus the message that he or she earns 30 euro cents with the sale of that card to invest in his or her education. And that ain’t no magic!

The high school graduation wave in Peru still isn’t over. After 3 teenagers graduating in December, it was Juan Gabriel’s turn last month. He didn’t just graduate, he actually got the highest marks of all of his class mates!

Because Juan Gabriel spent a period of his youth wondering on the streets singing for money he got behind in school. The staff of the street children project he moved into thought it would be best for little Juan to get a more practical education and job experience. In order for him to get a high school degree he assisted a special weekend school which allows its students to work during the week. And with great success!

It turns out that Juan Gabriel has quiet some academic potential though. He even wants to pursue further studies at the university. The coming months he will prepare himself for the admission exam at a private institute, with the money he earned from the sale of his cards. This way he hopes to get in uni to study communication sciences. He will need a high score in his admission exam to get in, so brushing up his knowledge will be necessary.

On top of that he is also studying English at another institute and got a scholarship to study photography outside of FairMail. All in all Juan Gabriel is doing a great job in developing his potential and be able to help his family in the future. Because, despite the problems they had when he was young, he hopes to be able to build a real house on the piece of land his family squatted on the edge of the city. And that way providing him with a bed that doesn’t get wet when it rains.

Five new teenagers start trial period in Peru and India

Due to different reasons there were 6 vacancies for teenage photographers to be filled in Peru and India. With the help of our local partners (Asha Deep School in India and CEPMundo de Niños and ACJ in Peru) we pre-selected 5 responsible teenagers who are motivated to go school but have economic difficulties to do so, for a trial period. During this period they will participate in all of FairMail activities and trainings, trying to show us that they are also motivated to work for FairMail. And that they will be able to make full use of the opportunity they are getting with the camera we borough to them.

The vacancies in Peru where created due to three teenagers reaching the age of 19 when they stop taking pictures for FairMail and start to concentrate on their (university) education or personal business with the money they earned so far. One teenager in Peru stopped attending FairMail classes regularly. When after several warnings he didn’t show up another time we were forced to terminate his participation.

In India the 2 vacancies where created due to motivational problems of 2 of the teenagers. After several conversations and warnings this convinced us that 2 other teenagers would be able to make better use of the opportunity that FairMail seeks to give to deprived but motivated teenagers. All the 6 teenagers who stopped participating in FairMail, regardless of the reason why they stopped, will keep earning 50% of the profits made to invest in their education and housing. But they won’t be able to submit new pictures to FairMail.
