FairMail India photographer Aradhana together with her volunteer photography trainer

Aradhana.

FairMail's photography trips

FairMail

A unique way of getting to know the country because by travelling with the FairMail teenagers you don’t feel like a tourist at all and you get into very special situations where you can take great pictures.

This is what an ex-participant of FairMail’s photography trip said when asked to explain what is so good about travelling together with the FairMail teenagers. Besides treating yourself to a unique holiday you also help the teenagers to take pictures for their cards. Both by sponsoring the costs of their trip, but also by giving your opinion (as an consumer from the west) about their pictures and what has to be improved so people like you will buy them on a FairMail card. Read more about the trips here.

Four trips to Peru and India are planned for the next 12 months. All with guaranteed departure! Click below to read about the new destinations.

If you want to learn more please feel free to visit the photography trip information session on Saturday the 25th of August in Amsterdam from 15.00 until 17.00.

Two new teenagers where admitted in FairMail India, after a month long trial period, in June 2012 : Chandra Shekhar and Suman Rao, both 15 years old. The two vacancies came free due to retirement of Dhiraj Kannaujia and Akaashh Ram after turning 19 years old. Both new teenagers were selected mainly due to their family circumstances. But decisive in their favour was also their strong motivation to join FairMail, both having the right age to participate and because FairMail was looking for one boy and one girl to join the team.  We asked them both to introduce themselves to you below.

We wish them the best of luck in getting the most out of their four years in FairMail!

SUMAN RAO:

My name is Suman. I study in 8th class. My school’s name is Ashadeep Vidya Ashram. I am 15 years old.

I live with my family in Nagwa which is a place in Varanasi. In my family there are 5 people. My mother, my father and my two sisters.

All expenses are held by my parents. My parents work hard for my bright future. Their dream is to see me as a successful person. My mother works as a cook in a school and she works as house servant when she is done with her work at the school. My father works as laborer at construction sites to fulfill our needs.

I came to know about FairMail three years ago when I started studying in Ashadeep Vidyaashram from some of the other students of Ashadeep.

The thing which I like about FairMail is that volunteers come and teach so many nice things about photography also I like the games which are played by teenagers here.

My dream is to be a Kathak dance teacher and to fullfill my dreams for me in my future.

My first priority to spend FairMail money will be my education.

CHANDU:

My name is Chandra Shekhar but my friends call me Chandu which is short version of my name. I am 15 years old. I live in Varanasi a city of UP. I live with my parents.  There are 7 people in my family ( my mother, my father, my 2 sisters, my two brothers and me). I am the 2nd child of my family.

All FairMail’s teenagers are friend of mine so I came to know about FairMail from them.

The thing which I like about FairMail is that it  helps to those who really needy. There are many kids here in Varanasi who wants to study and also very good in it but are forced to work for their needs in their education and after that they have to leave their study because of the shortage of money. FairMail is helping few kids like those and it means a lot for them because it helps to make their future bright.

In my future I want to become a good chef it is hard for my parents to afford for this kinds of education as there are more my brothers and sisters for study I am quite sure that I will reach my goal with the help of FairMail.

I want to spend all of my money for my education which I will earn through FairMail.

Dhiraj in the FairMail India office

Dhiraj in the FairMail India office

On the first of May 2012 FairMail India photographer Dhiraj retired from FairMail after three years working as teenage photographer. Because of his responsible attitude and improved English skills he got a new job as the first assistant manager of FairMail India. We asked him what he thought of his early retirement and the new challenge ahead of him. Here is what he said:

What do you think about your retirement from FairMail as photographer?

« Retirement from FairMail as a photographer its little bit sad because I enjoy taking photos for postcards. I miss that very much. The way I learn photography and English in FairMail was very cool. And also my friends in FairMail have more years then me as I started at an older age. I wish that I could have had more time as a photographer. »

(FairMail works with teenagers until they reach the age of 19. Then they retire, handing over there camera to a new and younger teenager so they can have the same opportunity. This way we prevent dependency from FairMail and make it clear to the teenagers that they only have a certain amount of time in which they have to be very motivated to get out of FairMail what is in it for them. Their « pension » consists of 50% of the earnings of their pictures which FairMail keeps selling for them as long as possible. They can’t product NEW pictures though.)

What did you like most about your time as photographer? What was your best memory?

« As a photographer I like taking photo’s with friends and having fun together. Every day was nice. I always got something to learn and improve myself. But my best memory was when my photo was selected for the HEMA christmas cards. That was my best memory. I was very happy because there was competition from Peru and India and Peru got 4 out of the five pictures selected by the HEMA. »

What was the most valuable thing you got out of your time as photographer for FMI?

« I earned money, photography skills and I learnt English. »

As you can read on Dhiraj’s profile page he earned 2050 euro so far with the sale of his photographs and cards.

What do you think about your new job as assistant to Akshay?

« It is a new experience for me. I have things like translating before during classes, but then I was still a photographer. I like FairMail so much as I said, I wish I could have more time in FairMail as a photographer because I will learn more things. Akshay, our national coordinator, has so many work to do in FairMail and outside of FairMail so I like to help him because he help us lot. »

What do you think you still need to learn to do  better to be a good assistant manager?

« I need to improve my in English, think like a responsible person and be strict but in a cool way. »

Which of your new tasks do you like?

« I like translating the English photography classes the volunteers teach us into hindi for the students because I like to teach people. »

Besides translating the photography classes Dhiraj is also in charge of giving photography classes when there aren’t any volunteers and help manage the pictures the teenagers take and store on FairMail’s computer.

FairMail photographer Aradhana

FairMail photographer Aradhana

Hi!

I am Aradhana, one of the FairMail teenagers in India. I am very happy to be a part of FairMail as I did not know any things about photography. Few of my classmates were working in FairMail and I was thinking if I also get chance to work in FairMail will be precious things in my life because I heard many good things about FairMail.

Aradhana's family in front of her house

Aradhana's family in front of her house

I was hopeless about my future because I want to become a doctor and my parents are very poor as my father is a rickshaw puller and my mother is a house wife. So I was thinking a lot about my future that how can I achieve my goal and now I see my friends and how much positively they are thinking about their goal that they can fulfill as FairMail helps them to make them to think positive and helps them through selecting a good photos to make them cards so they can earn money for their educations.

So now I think I can also reach my goal by doing hard work in FairMail and my study. I also get as a medical fund for me and for my family through which I can help my parents and now my parents are proud on me so many thanks to FairMail.

Many Greetings
Aradhana Singh.
