FairMail and Goldbek winning the 2018 “Hamburg! Handelt! Fair!” competition

lunes, enero 22nd, 2018

2018 couldn’t be off to a better start! Last week the Hamburg City Hall hosted the final round of the Hamburg! Handelt! Fair! competition.

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness on fair trade products and to implement effective marketing strategies to promote them on the market. Six teams of students from six local universities worked hand in hand with Hamburg-based companies that sell fair trade products and came up with thorough market research that were presented on January 11, 2018 before a 10-member jury of businesses and local associations.

We couldn’t be happier and prouder to announce that the students from EBC Hochschule Hamburg, supported by our German publisher GOLDBEK, won the first prize! Astrid, Lea, Laura and Sylie provided a very accurate insight on how FairMail and Goldbek could improve our online brand awareness and visibility.
On behalf of the whole FairMail family, congratulation on your achievement, girls!!

FairMail founders Janneke Smeulders and Peter den Hond receive the cheque

Meta lograda!

another cake finished in the ACJ Bakery

another cake finished in the ACJ Bakery

The success story of ex-FairMail photographer Patricia from Peru continues. In past newsletters you could read about how she started her own bakery with fellow ex-photographer Betty and how they managed to attract foreign investment in their growing business.

Despite the setback of her partner Betty leaving the business to pursue other destinies Patricia is doing great. In the end of 2013 she won the first prize of a business competition organized by the Peruvian government. The competition was aimed at stimulating young entrepreneurs to set up their own business. After the training sessions Patricia managed to convince the judges during the pitching session to give her the first prize of 2.500 Peruvian soles (about 650 euro).

With this money she bought a new oven and is now refurbishing her mother’s house to make it suitable to house the bakery’s facilities. This way she will become independent from the facilities she now rents from ACJ El Milagro and will spend less time commuting. Also at home Patricia’s mother and sisters can help baking the products.

Apart from the investment in her new facilities she has also managed to expand her product range including more sweets like meringues, cookies, «crema de leche» and «cocitos». Also she has managed to formalize her business with the tax authorities, making the way free to sell (and invoice) to corporate clients.

A big thanks from Patricia to all who have supported her with the purchase of her cards. A special thanks goes out to Marlies van Appel from our Dutch partner Context Cards who provided different baking accessories and to Pieter Parmentier for investing in Patricia’s business when she really needed it.

FairMail wins Partnership Award

FairMail wins Partnership Award

Last Wednesday we were very surprised to hear that FairMail was awarded with the Best Partner Award at Nyenrode Business University. This competition aims to highlight successful examples of partnerships between companies, government and non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) that contribute to international development.

According to the Dutch government the business community has a vital role to play in the future of international development cooperation. And according to the jury FairMail is a prime example of this new way of thinking and acting. Both because of the partnerships with local NGO’s in Peru, India and Morocco that work with at risk teenagers and because of the partnerships with international card publishers printing and selling the cards in Europe.

The competition was organized by the Dutch Ministry of foreign affairs, NCDO, NU.nl and Behold. Winning the award means, besides the recognition and media attention, 20.000 euro in marketing budget to be spent on NUzakelijk.nl.
