View of the street from the FairMail office

View of the street from the FairMail office

Every year from June to September the heavy monsoon rains fall on India’s dry soil. This is vital for the rain fed agriculture. However this year intense rains have caused the worst flooding in the past 10 years. The situation got so bad that even the FairMail office got surrounded by the rising water and had to be evacuated.

The FairMail office is situated in Nagwa, in the pilgrim city of Varanasi on the borders of the holy Ganges river. The river had to carry so much rain water that the river left its borders. This happens every year during the monsoon. But this year the amount of water was so much that the water flooded parts of Nagwa too. First the water entered the houses of a few of our teenage photographers and their families.

The water just kept rising until also the streets around the FairMail office where flooded. There was no other option then to evacuate the FairMail office and look for another temporary housing option for our volunteer and to suspend the free photography classes until the office would be accessible again.

We where very lucky that the FairMail office is on the third story. Four of our teenagers where less lucky and where forced to move themselves and their belongings to the roof of their houses. In stead of being desperate their reaction was more calm. «You just have to manage it» is mostly their reply when the going gets tough.

Like with FairMail teenagers Anil Rao who is brushing his teeth up to his knees in the water running through the street in front of his house.  There is perhaps a lot of wisdom in their reaction. Because in the end it all comes down to how you handle a situation and can manage with the means you do have available.  Like this man on a rikshaw below.

Fotografo Anil Rao de FairMail India retorna a colegio

FairMail India photographer Anil Rao

FairMail India photographer Aradhana together with her volunteer photography trainer

Aradhana.

Due to different reasons there were 6 vacancies for teenage photographers to be filled in Peru and India. With the help of our local partners (Asha Deep School in India and CEP, Mundo de Niños and ACJ in Peru) we pre-selected 5 responsible teenagers who are motivated to go school but have economic difficulties to do so, for a trial period. During this period they will participate in all of FairMail activities and trainings, trying to show us that they are also motivated to work for FairMail. And that they will be able to make full use of the opportunity they are getting with the camera we borough to them.

The vacancies in Peru where created due to three teenagers reaching the age of 19 when they stop taking pictures for FairMail and start to concentrate on their (university) education or personal business with the money they earned so far. One teenager in Peru stopped attending FairMail classes regularly. When after several warnings he didn’t show up another time we were forced to terminate his participation.

In India the 2 vacancies where created due to motivational problems of 2 of the teenagers. After several conversations and warnings this convinced us that 2 other teenagers would be able to make better use of the opportunity that FairMail seeks to give to deprived but motivated teenagers. All the 6 teenagers who stopped participating in FairMail, regardless of the reason why they stopped, will keep earning 50% of the profits made to invest in their education and housing. But they won’t be able to submit new pictures to FairMail.

Dhiraj with his family

Dhiraj with his family

Remember Dhiraj? The Indian FairMail photographer who traveled through Europe last summer on a FairMail promotion tour and to investigate his card market? When asked by his audience he often repeated that he was waiting for the result of his exam in political sciences.

Now, 7 months later, he finally got the result. As we figured many people would be curious to know we asked him about it. These are the answers we got from him:

1. So what was the result of your exam?

The result was good. The entire process of the exam took about one month to complete with written and oral segments every few days. My goal was to receive 53% and that is the score that I got.

2. How long did you have to wait between taking the exam and hearing the result?

I had to wait six to seven months to hear the result.

3. Why did it take so long?

Well, Uttar Pradesh (the largest Indian state, where Varanasi is situated, red.) has the highest population of students and my college has different boards throughout Uttar Pradesh that are all graded at the same time. So it takes a long time to do that.

4. So what is the next thing you have to do to become an IAS officer?

I have to take an entrance exam and if I pass I will be invited to have an interview. In the next six months, I will prepare for that exam at an institute for IAS officer preparation, and then I will take the exam in May or June.

5. How much money do you still need to earn to finish your study to become an IS officer?

For preparation I will need about 50.000 rupees (725 euro) More or less.
