Record earnings for FairMail teenagers in 2009!

viernes, diciembre 3rd, 2010

elmer200The year 2009 was another very lucrative year for the teenage photographers from FairMaiPeru and FairMail India. With their 50% of the profit from the sale of their pictures, their health care insurance and wage for the packing of the cards the 27 teenagers earned almost 10.000 euro in 2009. A new record!

Since the start of FairMail inJuly 2006 the teenagers have earned almost 28.000 euros together. Also in 2009 David was the photographer with the highest earnings. Since his 19th birthday last yearFebruary he no longer works for FairMail but as a heavy equipment operator in a mine (he financed his degree with FairMail earnings). But he keeps earning money from the sale of his phot’s he made while he was still working as FairMail photographer.

David’s number one rankingis being challenged though by young gun Elmer, also fromPe ru. Especially with his Christmas cards he has been very succesfull.

For an exact overview of the earnings per teenagers you can view their personal page on the FairMail website. For example click here to go to David’s page.

Exposicion de fotografia de adolescentes de FairMail India

viernes, diciembre 3rd, 2010

Less then nine months after the teenage photographers from India received their first photography class they opened their first real photography exposition on the 26th of November for inhabitants and visitors of Varansi. You can imagine how proud the teenagers and their parentsD where to see the pictures hanging in a real gallery and being watched by many visitors. The theme of the exposition was “Documents of the every day”. It showed pictures with Indian streetlife through the eyes of the 10 Indian FairMail photographers.

This great moment in the careers of the teenagers wouldn’t have been possible without the great initiative of our volunteers Annelies and Elena, the effort of our manager Akshay and the hospitality of the gallery holder, Mr. Nag.

At this moment behind the scenes an effort is being made to get a photobook published with other street life pictures made by the teenagers. An American publisher has shown interest. As soon as we know more we will let you know.

For more pictures of the opening of the expostion, please visit FairMail’s facebook page.

Mariaflor construye techo para casa de su familia

viernes, diciembre 3rd, 2010

mariaflor200Great news from Mariaflor who managed to improve her families house with a real door and a sturdy roof out of her earnings from the sale of her FairMail cards. Ever since a new pub opened its doors a few doors down the block the old door made of recycled bits of steel no longer offered the necessary protection from invading drunks. Together with her mother and FairMail Peru’s manager they went to the hard ware store to by the necessary materials and contract a handy man. Now the job is finished and visitors to Mariaflor’s house can sit in a roofed living room in stead of an open air space between three mud brick walls.

The best thing of all is that Mariaflor was able to provide a serious contribution to her family. She is often arguing with her mother’s new boy friend who says she is wasting her time with FairMail and she should go find a «real» job in stead of continue studying. Now Mariaflor has contributed more to the housing of then the «family chief» who spends a big part of his earning drinking beer. Yeah, girl power!

Informe de visita de directora Janneka a FairMail India

viernes, diciembre 3rd, 2010

FairMail pioneer Janneke Smeulders visited FairMail India for the third time in October 2010. This is her story:

«My visit of 3 weeks to the FairMail India team was intensive, impressive and great at the same time, a lot has happened:

Welcome and new office:

On the train station in Varanasi I was welcomed warmly by our manager Akshay, FairMail photographers Dhiraj and Akaash and our American and Swiss volunteers Brittanie and Carole. So it was a cosy and fun ride through the busy streets to the office! Since September we are located in a new office which I had not seen yet so that was a nice surprise: a fine location, a good, big and clean office with 2 extra rooms for volunteers and a huge rooftop terrace that we can use for warm up games and photography classes.

Great! The atmosphere in the office is very good, there is a lot of laughter in the team and good cooperation. It is great to see how well Akshay is running this office. Big compliments to him! We did a lot of games and also a serious workshop about the individual reasons to be in FairMail and the personal goals of all of us. From those results we formulated our common goals. Some of the dreams that the students have turn out to be the dreams of their parents: for example Anuj wants to become a hardware engineer but does not know what this profession is exactly nor how to become one: it is his father that says that he wants his son to become a hardware engineer. In good communication with the parents we want to try and stimulate the students to think for themselves what they like to do and what they would like to become.

Photographer Sonu dies:

Two days after my arrival, Sonu died, for me that was unexpectedly quick although he had hepatitis B for years already. Family and the FairMail students told me how he wanted to be a good host until the last moment and how he kept on being serving and polite. When his body gave up, he still managed to step outside and lie on the floor outside his house. There is where he passed away. Sad and impressive for everybody around him. Sonu was carried to the Ganges and cremated, his ashes were spread out in the holy river. With the memories and through his photos that FairMail shows to the whole world, Sonu and his way to look at the world will stay alive.

The first FairMail India photography trip:

Sandhya, Akaash en Dhiraj had the best personal scores (they get points for motivation, coming in time, helping Akshay etc.) so they were invited to go on this photography excursion to the hill station of Pachmarhi, 14 hours by train from Varanasi. Also Akshay, Brittanie and me went and Eileen, our only “voluntourist” that had booked the trip through internet (check out her great pictures by clicking here). Eileen was so great to collect donations among her friends and family so that the costs for all 3 teenagers were covered! The trip was a big success: we all fully enjoyed the green nature, the waterfalls, the friendly and relaxed people (what a difference with the big city!) and each others company.

Made it with the whole team to the waterfall

Made it with the whole team to the waterfall

Eating 3 meals a day together was an important part of the trip, as this was great to get to know each other better…. and because the food was so tasty! For the 3 students this was the first time they were on a train and in a hotel, so that was impressive. The 6 students that stayed behind in Varanasi missed them a lot, they called daily! Also from a photographic view the trip was a success: we made a great new selection of photos that will go on-line on the website soon!»

Fotografa Maria flor empieza en la universidad

jueves, diciembre 2nd, 2010

We are very proud of Maria flor from FairMail Peru. Here she is with three of her friend with whom she finished pre-university year.

mariafloruni450

In January 2011 she will start her 4 year course in communication sciences. This acheivement didn’t come easily at all for Maria flor. With her family she is living next to the Trujillo prison where she ended up when she moved to the big city with her mother. Jobs weren’t easy to come by, so like many of the inhabitants of the «El Milagro» slum (which means the miracle in Spanish!) she ended up working on the garbage belt. With the collection of paper, tin, iron and glass they managed to earn just enough to get by. By now her mother had a new man. He and Mariaflor didn’t get along wel, but two brothers and a sister followed. With the help of ACJ (a community centre in El Milagro) and later FairMail she managed to finish secondary school last year.

Because the education tought at the public school in El Milagro is of low quality had to prepare herself last year before being able to aply for the prestigous Cesar Vallejo university in Trujillo. She also succeded in that. The only problem was she hadn’t earned enough money yet with her photography for FairMail to start. That’s why the last months she has been working as a waitress in the same restaurant her mother is working as a cook. Despite the horrible situation at home (her father can’t keep his hands to himself), Maria flor is determined to give her family better oppertunities then the ones she had. That is why we are so proud of her breaking the circle of poverty! Of course we will be in touch with Maria flor and monitoring her university results.

Want to read more about Mariaflor, check her pictures or send her an e-mail to congratulate her? Then click here.

Fotografo Akaash duplica sus ganancias con propio negocio

akash2

Akaash’s dream is to improve the mechanic workplace he runs with his father so it can provide more income for his family. That’s why he had already invested part of his profit from the sale of his cards in spare parts and tools.

With the sale of his newest card he was able to buy an old motorcycle for 3.000 rs. akaash1300After a thorough maintenance job worth 2.000 rs he has already been able to sell it for 10.000 rs. So a very good investment that has made his dream come a bit closer.

akaash2300Akaash is one of the teenagers who likes to work with his hands and is not motivated to follow further education. You can’t really blame him after seeing what this has brought his brother and sister. Both have a university degree but no job and thus can’t support the family. Luckily Akaash does understand that to run a succesfull business he has to be able to read, write and do his maths. That’s why he, Anil and Sonu hired the services of a private tutor to learn at least the basics. The coming years FairMail will be following up on Akaash and guiding him to make his mechanic workplace a success.

Dos chicos de FairMail India regresan al colegio

miércoles, diciembre 1st, 2010

tuition150After years without going to school, two teenagers of FairMail India are following classes again since the beginning of this year. With their income from the sale of their cards they hired a private tutor to help them catch up. Lack of money and responsibilities for their families made that Anil and Akaash hadn’t been to school for some years now.

At FairMail photography is a means for teenagers to realize their own dreams. For some of them this roads leads past the university or some sort of advanced education. But others dream of working with their hands and investing in their own business. That is why school is not the best option for all of the teenagers. Especially if they have already fallen behind a couple of years. But still FairMail believes it will be almost impossible to accomplish your dream if you can’t at least read, write and know some maths. Luckily our manager Akshay and some of the teenagers colleagues managed to convince the two boys of this after some initial doubts from their side.

This made the surprise even bigger when we heard a few weeks back that one of the two boys, Anil, has gotten so enthusiastic about following classes that he wants to return to a proper school! As you can imagine we are very happy that FairMail gave him the opportunity to rediscover his passion to learn.
