FairMail's 2012 fair trade calendar

FairMail's 2012 fair trade calendar

FairMail’s new 2012 fair trade calendar (click here for webversion) just arrived and almost sold out straight away!

The big calendar has 12 pictures made by the teenagers from FairMail Peru. Each month contains a different picture and a personal story and picture of the teenager who took that month’s beautiful pictures.  50% of the profit of the sale goes to the teenagers personal education fund.

Also nice to know is that the calendar is printed with biodegradable ink, on FSC certified paper at a printer that off-sets its CO2 emissions.

After the 2011 calendar already sold out in September we printed twice as much this year. But still after the pre-orders there are currently only 145 calendars left. So if you want to be sure you won’t be late again this year for this great calendar, just order on-line through FairMail’s webshop.

FairMail photographer Aradhana

Hi!

I am Aradhana, one of the FairMail teenagers in India. I am very happy to be a part of FairMail as I did not know any things about photography. Few of my classmates were working in FairMail and I was thinking if I also get chance to work in FairMail will be precious things in my life because I heard many good things about FairMail.

Aradhana's family in front of her house

Aradhana's family in front of her house

I was hopeless about my future because I want to become a doctor and my parents are very poor as my father is a rickshaw puller and my mother is a house wife. So I was thinking a lot about my future that how can I achieve my goal and now I see my friends and how much positively they are thinking about their goal that they can fulfill as FairMail helps them to make them to think positive and helps them through selecting a good photos to make them cards so they can earn money for their educations.

So now I think I can also reach my goal by doing hard work in FairMail and my study. I also get as a medical fund for me and for my family through which I can help my parents and now my parents are proud on me so many thanks to FairMail.

Many Greetings
Aradhana Singh.

(English) FairMail expands to Marocco

Montag, Dezember 26th, 2011

Leider ist der Eintrag nur auf English, Nederlands und Español verfügbar.

Almost 5 years after the first FairMail picture was taken on the garbage belt of Trujillo it is clear that the FairMail concept is capable of having a positive impact on deprived teenagers over the whole world. That is why Janneke & Peter are working hard on a new business plan for 2017!

Janneke knows where she wants to go next

Janneke knows where she wants to go next

One of the goals is that FairMail expands to 5 production countries with a total of 100 teenage photographers. First on the list is the start up of FairMail Morocco in 2012.

In the beginning of 2012 a first visit will take place to get to know different potential local partners to cooperate with. Later that year Peter and Janneke will live in Morocco for 12 months in the chosen location to set up the third production unit in the same way as in Peru and India.

The choice for the right location of the FairMail office in Morocco is extremely important. We are looking for a place that (i) is photogenic, (ii) has an interesting group of teenagers to work with who could really use a concept like FairMail. We will have to get in contact with them through (iii) a local partner that also believes in our business approach. And then it is also important (iv) which language the teenagers speak so we can find enough qualified volunteers to train them in photography skills. And (v) that it is a place where you can do business with electricity, internet, safety etc.. And last but not least (vi) that we can sell enough cards and pictures to make FairMail Morocco financially independent within 6 months!

We already have a list of potential partners we will visit in Morocco (in Casablanca, Marakesh, Sidi Ifni, Fez and Essaouira). But if you know someone who lives in Morocco, runs a business or works with deprived teenagers, please let us know by clicking here.

Thanks!

FairMail Peru photographer Elmer

FairMail Peru photographer Elmer

Hi, I am Elmer, am 18 years old and live in the Casa de Jovenes (teenagers house) in Trujillo. The house belongs to Mundo de Ninos which is a boys home for children who have problems and helps them with studying, housing, food, etc. It is cool too live in this house which is helping us a lot.

Before Mundo de Ninos I, Elmer, worked in the streets of Trujillo selling sweets or singing in the public transport. Until I decided to go to Mundo de Ninos so they could help me with my studies and to have a place to live. And feel like there is a family at home waiting for you. And thanks to Mundo de Ninos I found FairMail. In FairMail they taught me many things about photography, about how to take my pictures, composition and many other things which helped me as a person.

FairMail Family

FairMail Family

It is already three years that I am in FairMail now and in that time I learned a lot from the volunteers, sharing nice moments and adventures that, I think, after I leave FairMail next year, will never repeat themselves. But these things are very cool and I like to be in the FairMail family. I have friends there with which I can share many things like brothers.

Thanks to FairMail I was able to study computer skills buy a laptop, practice and graphic design. This helps me a lot with my homework but will also be useful in the future when I do my advanced studies.

My new room at my families house

My new room at my families house

I was also able to build my own room in my mothers house in Alto Trujillo (new settlement on the border of Trujillo) and bought a stove for my mother so she does not have to cook on wood any more which produces toxic gases which is harmful for her health.

At the moment I am in my last year of secondary school Next year I will go to the university. I would love to study something related to photography or graphic design. The perfect study would be Communication Sciences I think.
To be honest FairMail has influenced my life a lot and helped me a lot. I will never stop to thank for all the opportunities it has given me. I also won a trip too Europe in June. This for me is something extraordinary and a one of a lifetime experience.

My goal is to finish my career and be a professional. And that my family is proud of me and that I will be able to live again together with my mother and brother in the centre of the city.

Thanks and Greetings, Elmer

(English) A new beginning for FairMail photographer Betty

Betty from FairMail Peru

Betty from FairMail Peru

Last week we received a message from one of our Peruvian photographers: Betty. Because of domestic problems she had to leave her house with her mother, sister and two brothers. Despite that though she is determined to bring the new beginning to a good end. This is the translation of her message:

Hello friends, my name is Betty.

I live in El Milagro (name of the outscirts of Tujillo where the cities garbage belt is situated) with my mother, sister and two brothers. Due to domestic problems my mother had to get seperated from my father. Now we only live with my mother. I am 17 years old and member of the  asociación de jóvenes cristianos del Perú (ACJ red. Peruvian version of the YMCA).

Well, my family and I have always worked on the garbage belt to find materials which we could recycle and which I would have to sell. I was totally fed up with this work. When I participated in a ACJ workshop I heard people talk about an interesting company called FairMail. Unfortunately I did not know how you could get a job there, but I knew that one day I would succeed.

By now I am working for FairMail for almost 2 years. Itis cool because we work together like brothers and sisters. I am using the money I earned with my card sale to pay for things to finish my secondary school and for the admission acadamy I am studying in now. I want to take the exam to get admitted to the National University of Trujillo where I want to study communication sciences. I am happy with FairMail and that this way I was able to pay for my own study. And not have to be a burden for my parents now that they don’t have the money to support me in this.

Right now I am living with my mother, brothers and sister in the house of my grandma. There we built a little room for ourselfves out of reed mats so we have a place to sleep. I know that with the sale of my cards I will make progress in life and acheive the goals I have in mind for me and my family. So we can all live in happines.

Thanks to everyone. I invite you to buy the cards of FairMail India and FairMail Peru. I hope there are some cards that you wil like.

Thanks, Betty Chanta

(English) FairMail India lost in the jungle?

First group meeting with the team

First group meeting with the team

Mid March FairMail initiator Peter den Hond went for a three week visit to FairMail india. Read below about his most marvelous day, how he helped to clear a path through the jungle and found Tibetian treasures hidden in the Himalayas.

After a 12 hour train journey I arrived in the holy city of Varanasi on the borders of the Ganges river. At the train station I was picked up by our managers Akshay and three of the FairMail photographers to take me to the new office of FairMail India. I felt straight away that there was a lot of good energy, fun and friendship between the team members. „Great to see, but if everything was already going so well in India, what was my role going to be here the coming weeks?“

Lost in the jungle?

Common goals set by FairMail team

Common goals set by FairMail team

During the last visit by Janneke in Octobre the whole team identified the collective goals of FairMailIndia (see picture). Earn money, Learn things, Help others, Get a profession and have fun together where the main goals. Since then the team is working hard on the succes of FairMail India. You can visualize it as if they are working hard every day chopping their way through the jungle in the direction of their goal. Then it is good if every now and then a foreigner comes in, climbs into the highest tree to look over the forest and see if we are still going in the right direction to reach our goal.

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

Ways FairMail India can improve according to the team

The teenagers aren’t used to openly criticize and evaluate their employer. But with some warming up we managed to get quiet a few examples of things going well or not going so well. And even a lot of ideas of how we can improve FairMail India! For example the kids where happy with the fact that money was actually being earned now  for their eduational and medical needs, but they where disappointed that of a few team members hardly any images where being selected. And according to them FairMail uniforms and ID cards would be a great improvement. (see picture). Now we all know which way we are heading the whole team is back to work together. clearing a path through the jungle again.

Tibetan treasures in the Himalayas

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

The whole group who travelled to Darjeeling

Besides the jungle we also went to the Himalayas. During the second FairMail India photography trip we travelled to the foot of the Indian Himalayas for 10 days. We went with 4 of the photographers, manager Akshay and travelling photographer Mr. Henk. We wanted to discover a new part of their country with the teenagers, get to know each other better and of course take great pictures for the new catalogue. In the north east of India there are many Buddhist influences from nearby Tibet and Bhutan. So perfect to take pictures of Buddha statues and Tibetan monks walking in the street.  Take a look at the new pictures the teenagers took and judge for yourself.

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

Brainstorming about ideas for pictures in front of the fire place

The promised view of the snow capped Himalaya stayed away for a long time due to the bad weather. For the teenagers who where used to warmer weather it was extremely cold at this altitude. They quickly had to buy glooves, scarves and hats to stay warm. Luckily our hotel had a nice fire place which they had never seen before! (see picture). Watch the small video about the trip by clicking here. We showed it during parent day to all the parents so they have an idea what we do to their kids when we take them away for 10 days!

A great (parent) day for Sandhya

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

Sandhya could not believe how much she had earned!

For me the parent day we organized the last day was great because that way we could discuss the dreams the teenagers wanted to full fill with help of FairMail with their parents too. Despite their background/caste or financial situation. That was very inspiring to see for me! But I think the parent day was even more special for Sandhya. When we discussed the quarterly profit per teenager she learned that she had earned the crazy amount of 46.000 rupees with the sale of her cards in the last 3 months. (as a comparison the local fair trade liveable wage is set at 4.500 rupees per month. And Sandhya earns her money while taking free photography classes 10 hours per week, while her father has to try and repair rickshaws 48 hours per week!). Now FairMail India (like Peru) is starting to earn serious money we have to communicate more with the parents and their kids about finding ways to spend the money in an efficient and effective way. With local customs like arranged marriages, dowries and traditional gender relations this will become a nice challenge for the months to come. We already started „wishing“ and discussing the „Creation Spiral“ by writer Martinus Knoope.

Like last time the good bye bit was quick and hasty due to the full programme the last day. But that made the relaxation for me in the train back to Delhi all the better. A good chance for me to really feel that the coaching of local production units is the part of my work at FairMail that I enjoy most!

Two years ago David and Cinthia from Peru visited the Netherlands on a similar mission which turned out to be a great success! This time we are able to let the teenagers meet their customers and the other way around thanks to a subsidy from the Dutch ministry of economical affairs and our German distributor.

Every year FairMail organizes about 6 photography trips in Peru and India. Together with a few of the FairMail teenagers you make a 13 day trip. You take pictures together with these locals  and you share experiences and perspectives.  This is an unique way to get to know a new country. According to former participants you get to take many great pictures without ever feeling like a tourist because you are working together with local kids. For example taking pictures of the colourful local market.  Click here for a short video of our last trip to the Indian Himalayas.

On Sunday the 15th of May 2011 FairMail is organizing a meeting in Amsterdam, Holland, for those interested in knowing FairMail from first hand.

(English) Fair Trade stock photography available for businesses and organisations

Samstag, Dezember 10th, 2011

FairMail’s mission is to sell the pictures made by our teenage photographers so they can invest part of the profit in their future. Besides the printing of pictures on greeting cards the pictures are being sold more and more to companies and organisations for their year reports, websites, office decoration and as internal stock photography for presentations by employees.

Fair trade pictures for the ASN Bank and DHV Consultancy

FM0019 RositaFor example the Dutch ethical ASN Bank already uses FairMail pictures for its internal year reports and publications about their share funds. According to Elly Bal, marketing officer at ASN „with pictures by FairMail you help teenagers in Peru and India create a better future for themselves“

DHV Consultancy was looking for images that represent their core corporate values and made a concrete picture assignment for the teenage photographers in Peru and India. Before the agreed deadline we sent them a large selection of the resulting images to choose from. These are now available for DHV employees to use in presentations  via the internal stock photography database. This way DHV can show it’s social corporate responsibility in an easy way.

How does it work?

Fm0335 AnilThrough FairMail’s online photo gallery the available images can be viewed. Through the tag cloud you can easily browse through different themes like environment, cooperation, or Christmas and New Year to find a picture for this years corporate Christmas Card. Each pictures has an unique code with which you can let FairMail know which picture you are interested in and request a price quote. It you can’t find what you are looking for yet you can give an assignment to our young photographers. They love to take pictures on demand! Knowing that if their pictures is good enough for the final selection they can earn the money necessary to finance their own education!

An idea for your employer?

FM0324 mariaflorPerhaps this is an idea for your employer or team. Just imagine that you and your collegues only use fair trade pictures in the future for your communication. Wouldn’t that be great? If wanted we can also provide an image and information about the teenager who took the picture. That way you can communicate the unique story behind your images easily.
