The FairMail Morocco Teenagers

The FairMail Morocco Teenagers

After the first 6 photography lessons we can now really state that FairMail Morocco has actually started. A group of 10 deprived local teenagers is getting free photography lessons three times a week and a digital camera to borrow.

On the 24th of November their pictures will be displayed to the world for the first time in a photography exhibit called “My Essaouira”. This photogenic Moroccan fishing village has been photographed by many international photographers. This will the first time that the local youth will show their own perspective on their village which will give an unique insight into their lives and what the different places in their village mean to them.

Two weeks after the exhibit the teenagers will receive an upfront payment of 500 dirham per pictures (about 50 euro) for their 20 best pictures which they can start to invest in their education. Hopefully these pictures will make it to FairMail postcards quickly so they can start to earn more. If this actually happens is very important for the future of FairMail Morocco in 2013. Only with a substantial growth of the sales will it be possible to employ the new teenagers on the long run. Without harming the earnings of the current teenagers in Peru and India, who after envisioning their dreams, are now working hard on making them reality. Because of this uncertainty the 10 teenagers (5 boys and 5 girls) received a temporary contract for 2 months. In the beginning of 2013 we will evaluate if FairMail’s sales has increased sufficiently to set up FairMail in Morocco definitely.

FairMail doesn’t do all the work in Morocco by itself. We cooperate with 3 local organizations that support underprivileged teenagers and put them forward to participate in FairMail:

FairMail is working together with 3 organizations here:

Au Coeur de l’Amitie, an organization that works with disadvantaged children by feeding them and providing an area for and help with schooling.  Each child gets a meal at lunchtime and something to eat after school before they go home.  They serve more than 30,000 hot meals per year to about 50 children.  They have very kindly given us a classroom to teach in on Saturdays.  We have four children from here – Hajiba (14, female), Badr (13, male), Chaima (14, female) and Fatimzara (14, female).

Founded in 1995, BAYTI, meaning my «home», works with children in difficult situations – street kids, victims of economic or sexual exploitation, victims of violence and children from destitute backgrounds. The programme is for all children and families in difficulty needing protection, assistance, counseling and orientation. Our kids from Bayti are Ibtissam (14, female), Siham (15, female) and Mohammed (16, male). Unfortunately Mohammed stopped attending classes and is currently not participating any more.

Dar At Talib, meaning ‘House of the Student’, is a foundation that has been established to help local children continue with their studies, providing lodging, food, monitoring and tutoring. From Dar Attalib we have Jaoud (12, male), Abdallah (16, male) and Mounaim (15, male).

You can help ensure FairMail stays in Morocco. By pointing out FairMail as a potential Christmas card supplier to your employer this year. That way you will be helping increase the sale of the teenagers’ pictures.

New this year is a Christmas e-card with a video message of the teenager who took the picture and who receives 50% of the profit in his own education. You can read more in this digital Christmas flyer.

Amongst the people who provide us with a successful lead we will be giving away one photography trip for two with the teenagers in Peru or India. You can read more about how this works here!

Anil Kumar

Anil Kumar

Last month we received the following message from FairMail India photographer Anil Kumar:

«Hi
I am Anil Kumar, a photographer of FairMail India. I have been working in FairMail for the past three and half years and it has been a great privileged to work in this company. For that me and my family are thankful to FairMail.

I did not know how to read and write when I started in FairMail in 2009. With the money I earned in FairMail I started private tuition. And after that I joined an English spoken course. Now I can read and write English and I can also understand and speak English. I am continuing with both courses and keeping my hope to grow in the future.

I also bought my own DSLR camera with my FairMail earnings. I am very happy with that as my future dream is to become a professional wild life photographer and I believe that I will achieve my goal. Thanks.»

Taking coffee photo's

Taking coffee photo

In August a few of the FairMail teenager travelled to the Peruvian cloud forest to take pictures of the organic coffee harvest for the German Coffee producer Rapunzel. Below you can read the trip report by photographer Betty.

In 2013 4 photography trips to Peru and India are scheduled. Would you like to learn more? Then register for the information session on Saturday the 9th of February by clicking here.

What was the best part of the trip for you?

The best part of the trip is the coopration with the other photographers, volunteers and the people we meet during the trip. But also the beautiful places of our Peru that we get to know. And of course the most important: take many great pictures!

What did you like about the destination compared to where you live in Trujillo?

What I like so much about Sicches is the peace and quiet and the nature. But also the friendliness of the people who live in the small village and give us a place to stay in their house.

Why would you like more foreigners to come on a trip with you in the future?

I would like more foreigners to travel with us so we can learn more from them. But also because they give us the opportunity to travel and that way get to know more about other parts of our Peru. Thanks to them and to FairMail we get to know our own culture better and we can identify with it. And then take great pictures of the cultural things we see.

What did you work on this time during the trip?

During the trip we worked for a company that requested our services to take pictures of organic coffee. Of the production process  the drying and the families that work in coffee production. But we also worked on general card themes like love, Christmas and light etc.

Which photo did you take during the trip which you think might make it to a FairMail postcard?

This one:

Betty's new postcard?

Betty

What will you do with the money you earn if it actually becomes a FairMail card?

With the money I would continue to pay for my education (business administration) to become a good professional. And that way not let my family down.

Why did only 3 teenagers get to go on the trip this time?

Because we didn’t have enough foreign travellers to support us. That’s why there wasn’t enough budget to take more teenagers to enjoy this great trip! Through a selection process 3 teenagers where chosen who could go.

FairMail Founder Peter den Hond after his pitch

Middle in the tropical jungle of Uganda FairMail was chosen as winner in the first edition of Ben & Jerry’s “Join Our Core” competition, aimed at finding the best business plans by young social entrepreneurs from Europe. After a 6 month search and going through all the idea’s the Dutch company FairMail was chosen as The Netherlands’ most sustainable & innovative idea. The company wants to contribute to solving the problem of child labour through a business approach. This means FairMail won the first prize of 10.000 euro, 6 months guidance by Ashoka and that the FairMail logo will be printed on the tubs of a brand new Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavour in 2013.

From the nearly 200 entry’s a qualified jury selected 15 finalist for the final stage in Uganda. During 10 days the finalists lived and worked together with a group of young fair trade vanilla farmers. Together they explored the business possibilities for the farmers to diversify their income and help their communities to develop.

From the Netherlands FairMail was chosen as winner. Besides FairMail the winners where Rubies in de Rubble from the UK, Archipelago from Ireland, Mattecentrum from Sweden and Play31 from Denmark.

According to FairMail founder Peter den Hond it is a great honour that FairMail was chosen from all the great business ideas. “Especially for the ex-street children from Peru that take the pictures on our fair trade greetings cards. With the prize money FairMail can set up a new production unit in Morocco later this year. With the guidance by Ashoka and with our logo printed on millions of Ben & Jerry’s packages it will be possible for FairMail to increase her impact. And give more teenagers the opportunity to finance their own education through the sale of their own pictures.»
