FairMail Exposition

FairMail Exposition

we asked the teenagers to take pictures of what was the most important thing in their daily lives in Essaouira. This way giving the visitors a unique inside view into the lives of the teenagers and what is important for them.

FairMail volunteer photography trainer

FairMail volunteer photography trainer

FairMail wouldn’t exist without the work of many international volunteer photography trainers who teach photography every week in Peru, India and Morocco. On average there are 2 volunteers per country at the same time who prepar 3 to 5 classes per week during the 2 months they work for FairMail. In an earlier blog we reported what this experience means from the volunteer perspective. But what to the FairMail teenagers think about their volunteer photography trainers? We asked the Indian teenagers:

  1. Why are volunteers important for you?

–          if the volunteers weren’t there, we could not learn about photography, so we would not be able to earn money

–          they are our guest, so we have to take care of them

–          because they give us ideas and projects to work on

–          because the volunteers teach us about their countries

–          they inspire us

  1. What do you think makes a good volunteer?

–          having ideas about what to teach us

–          the weak students should be encouraged by them

–          they should be good teachers

–          needs to be patient

–          it is good when they introduce new photographers

  1. Why do you think volunteers like to work for FairMail in Varanasi?

–          they will see India and the Indian culture, living circumstances,

–          help us to grow further

–          because the project is a good project where you can help people

–          because they can also travel around Varanasi (e.g. Ghats)

  1. What is sometimes difficult for the volunteers when they work with FairMail?

–          the weather, some volunteers get sick because of it

–          the trash/dirt outside

–          they can find the amount of people in India difficult/ crowd situation

–          language problem

–          people on the street might comment

  1. What would you like to say to people interested in becoming a volunteer in India?

–          they are most welcome, because through them we can learn. They can also tell us things from their own experience, not what they have learnt in books.

–          We want you to come to India to come and see our country, see the colours, festivals, etc.

–          We need help for taking better pictures.

Dhiraj with his family

Dhiraj with his family

Remember Dhiraj? The Indian FairMail photographer who traveled through Europe last summer on a FairMail promotion tour and to investigate his card market? When asked by his audience he often repeated that he was waiting for the result of his exam in political sciences.

Now, 7 months later, he finally got the result. As we figured many people would be curious to know we asked him about it. These are the answers we got from him:

1. So what was the result of your exam?

The result was good. The entire process of the exam took about one month to complete with written and oral segments every few days. My goal was to receive 53% and that is the score that I got.

2. How long did you have to wait between taking the exam and hearing the result?

I had to wait six to seven months to hear the result.

3. Why did it take so long?

Well, Uttar Pradesh (the largest Indian state, where Varanasi is situated, red.) has the highest population of students and my college has different boards throughout Uttar Pradesh that are all graded at the same time. So it takes a long time to do that.

4. So what is the next thing you have to do to become an IAS officer?

I have to take an entrance exam and if I pass I will be invited to have an interview. In the next six months, I will prepare for that exam at an institute for IAS officer preparation, and then I will take the exam in May or June.

5. How much money do you still need to earn to finish your study to become an IS officer?

For preparation I will need about 50.000 rupees (725 euro) More or less.

FairMail gana el premio «Best Partner»

FairMail wins Partnership Award

FairMail wins Partnership Award

Last Wednesday we were very surprised to hear that FairMail was awarded with the Best Partner Award at Nyenrode Business University. This competition aims to highlight successful examples of partnerships between companies, government and non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) that contribute to international development.

According to the Dutch government the business community has a vital role to play in the future of international development cooperation. And according to the jury FairMail is a prime example of this new way of thinking and acting. Both because of the partnerships with local NGO’s in Peru, India and Morocco that work with at risk teenagers and because of the partnerships with international card publishers printing and selling the cards in Europe.

The competition was organized by the Dutch Ministry of foreign affairs, NCDO, NU.nl and Behold. Winning the award means, besides the recognition and media attention, 20.000 euro in marketing budget to be spent on NUzakelijk.nl.

For this years Unicef photo competition I, Elmer Machuca Chacon (19 years, Peru) have chosen to tell my story about “How children are the victim of the poverty”.

FairMail Peru photographer Elmer Machuca Chacon

Sometimes life can be so difficult for parents that the children end up just as much a victim of poverty as them. This is a story I lived myself, but of course couldn’t take pictures of at that time.

During times each day is a nightmare. My niece hopes for daily bread, but sometimes there is none.

During times each day is a nightmare. My niece hopes for daily bread, but sometimes there is none.

That is why in these photos I choose to tell MY story through the eyes of my 5 year old niece called Annabel.

Enjoy while it lasts, because nice tastes of life come and go.

Enjoy while it lasts, because nice tastes of life come and go.

I want to show how she lives in poverty in the dessert on the outskirts of Trujillo.

Step by step reflecting on the injustice in life

Step by step reflecting on the injustice in life

Together with her mother and my alcoholic brother.

The best moment, because god came to her house and blessed her with food.

The best moment, because god came to her house and blessed her with food.

What her actual situation is and how she survives and maintains herself in a very complicated world filled with a lot of sadness.

Sadness starts when the perspective for a better life is lost

Sadness starts when the perspective for a better life is lost

But despite the sadness I also see her strength.

Trying to regain the right to study

Trying to regain the right to study

The strength to survive and to get out of her situation in a country where there is little support for children.

Below the look is the pain inside.

Below the look is the pain inside.

Through my pictures I like to show this inner strength many children do have.

A sweet look in times of sadness.

A sweet look in times of sadness.

I want to show that children, with the help of organizations and other children can utilize this inner force to break the chain of poverty and create a better life for themselves and their families.

Happiness comes like opening the water tap once a week.

Happiness comes like opening the water tap once a week.

Because the world should be a happy place for everyone.

I hope to become a lighting example for other children that this is possible, as it is my dream to study Cinema and Photography. I want to become a famous director and make a film like Slumdog Millionaire!

The FairMail Morocco Teenagers

The FairMail Morocco Teenagers

– In ENGLISH BELOW –

– IN ENGLISH –

FairMail, founded in 2006, is a company producing fair trade greeting cards with photos made in Peru and India by local underprivileged teenagers. FairMail’s mission is to offer opportunities for a better future to the teenagers, which they THEMSELVES create; by developing their creativity (through photography) and their self-esteem (through job experience, new skills and having their own product) so that they can choose their future paths more consciously.  With the money they earn in FairMail they can finance the education they need to realize these futures.

In 2012 FairMail decided to introduce the program to a third country, Morocco, and after a 3 week orientation trip in February, it was decided to open its doors in Essaouira and begin a pilot project working with underprivileged teenagers from Bayti, Au Couer de l’Amitie and Dar At Talib.  The teenagers have two group lessons and the option of a further private lesson per week. It has been an exciting start to FairMail Morocco with the teenagers already producing great photographs in such a short time.

On the 24th November we are hosting ‘My Essaouira’, an exhibition of the teenagers’ photographs showing Essaouira through their eyes, giving a unique perspective to their city. You are invited to watch their work and meet the young artists themselves on their Opening Night on the 24th November 2012.

The exhibition runs from 26th November to 1st December 2012, so if you are unable to make the Opening Night do visit another time, the teenagers would love you to see their work.

All the teenagers pictures are for sale. 100% of money goes directly to the teenager who took the picture for him or her to spend on their own education.
