Due to different reasons there were 6 vacancies for teenage photographers to be filled in Peru and India. With the help of our local partners (Asha Deep School in India and CEPMundo de Niños and ACJ in Peru) we pre-selected 5 responsible teenagers who are motivated to go school but have economic difficulties to do so, for a trial period. During this period they will participate in all of FairMail activities and trainings, trying to show us that they are also motivated to work for FairMail. And that they will be able to make full use of the opportunity they are getting with the camera we borough to them.

The vacancies in Peru where created due to three teenagers reaching the age of 19 when they stop taking pictures for FairMail and start to concentrate on their (university) education or personal business with the money they earned so far. One teenager in Peru stopped attending FairMail classes regularly. When after several warnings he didn’t show up another time we were forced to terminate his participation.

In India the 2 vacancies where created due to motivational problems of 2 of the teenagers. After several conversations and warnings this convinced us that 2 other teenagers would be able to make better use of the opportunity that FairMail seeks to give to deprived but motivated teenagers. All the 6 teenagers who stopped participating in FairMail, regardless of the reason why they stopped, will keep earning 50% of the profits made to invest in their education and housing. But they won’t be able to submit new pictures to FairMail.

Hollandse Hoogte

In our everlasting quest to try and find new markets for the teenagers pictures FairMail has signed deals with 4 international stock photography agencies (Corbis, Majority World, World Portraits and Hollandse Hoogte). This means that a selection of the teenager’s pictures will be available on their on-line image databases. These are used by their customers looking for images for a wide range of products varying from magazines to newspapers and from advertisements to book covers. From now on they will also be able to select FairMail images, directly supporting our motivated and talented teenagers. Just like with their postcards, 50% of the profit FairMail makes with the sale of the images goes directly into the teenagers personal education fund.

World Portraits

World Portraits

According to Cila d’Oliviera, production manager at World Portraits, “representing FairMail’s photography is a logical step for World Portraits. It fits with our special concept to let (deprived) individuals everywhere in the world share in the profits of the pictures sold. This way we don’t only offer the models, but also the talented teenage photographers, a new perspective. Together we can take the idea of fair trade photography to a new level

Please feel free to share the opportunity to purchase fair trade images to any friends and colleagues who purchase images professionally and might be interested in fair trade photography.

The goal of their visit is to investigate their greeting card market and promote the unique story behind the FairMail cards. We have set up the program to fulfill these goals. During the three weeks they will visit representatives of the fair trade community, product developers designing products with their pictures, publishers printing their cards and shops selling them. They have also been selected to present FairMail and their personal story at the central stage of the FAIR! B2B trade fair during two days in Dortmund, Germany. Also they will be meeting FairMail’s stock photography and “printing on demand” partners like Hollandse Hoogte and Greetz. On the 31st of august they will be meeting FairMail’s end customers while selling FairMail cards to the visitors of the free Westerpop music festival in Delft, The Netherlands. This year the theme of the European promotional tour will be “Back to School”. In august most European children go back to school, with the media often reporting about school related novelties. This year we hope to interest them for the novelty that in Peru, India and Morocco teenagers are also going back to school. But not after a pleasant holiday like most kids in Europe, but in their case after a youth working as child laborers. Thanks to their hard work and the sale of their fair trade pictures they have been able to change their destiny. And now two of them are here in Europe, available for interviews. We are still looking for more media contacts willing to interview Yomira and Yuli. Please let us know if you have any contacts. You can download the press release here.

FairMail Peru office adapts to climate change

Jorge, Sebastian and Renato putting on the new roof

A fresh wind of change is also blowing through the FairMail office in Peru where the photography teaching area and storage room are being remodeled. Due to climate change the dessert city of Trujillo is now regularly hit by surprise rain showers neither the city nor the FairMail office where prepared for. The tent above the teaching area wasn’t giving enough protection anymore. Also the red glow it gave to all the pictures taken under the tarp had been a nuisance for a long time.

So when, with the help of a donation from a photography traveler, the opportunity was there we decided to replace the tent with a decent and transparent plastic roof. This is now finished as you can see in the pictures with the new classroom only needing a new paint job. Thanks to the help of the teenagers who helped during the construction really making it their classroom again.

Next on the list, remodel the storage room

Next on the list, remodel the storage room

Next on the list is the construction of a professional photo studio in the former storage room. With FairMail’s changing business model towards concept and picture licensing instead of own card production the old storage room is no longer necessary. With the increased demand from our customers for “table top photography” in different greeting card themes we decided to change the storage room into a mini photo studio. The old shelves will be converted into glass tables letting through soft light on which we will place the new tabletop photo studio’s we bought with the help of a donation by Back Picture. We are also looking to install special lighting and increase the space so all the teenagers have enough space to let their creativity go wild.

We are very happy that now in Peru the teenagers can do what they do best under better circumstances and would like to thank Marlies Ketelaar and Back Picture for their valuable financial support in improving our production facilities. The Peruvian teenagers are very happy with their more professional photo studio.

FairMail Peru photographer Elmer gives his family a safe house to live in

Elmer's mothers house before remodelling

Elmer

Also looking very new is the house of ex-FairMail Peru photographer Elmer Machuca Chacon. When he turned 19 last year he not only left FairMail, but also the Mundo de Ninos boys home for ex-street children and moved back into his mother’s house in El Alto in Trujillo. The house he had left when he was 11 years old to roam on the streets (click here for the video about Elmer’s life back then).

El Alto is a new part of the city of Trujillo, lying on the sandy outskirts overlooking the city. Many of the newcomers to the city, looking for work they can’t find in the rural areas, squat a piece of land here to build their new home. Like Elmer’s mother 10 years ago. With a lot of poverty and little social cohesion El Alto is a dangerous part of Trujillo which Elmer himself encountered when he was robbed last January.

New doors placed in Elmer's house

New doors placed in Elmer

To make sure he and his family are at least safe inside their house Elmer used part of his FairMail earnings to remodels his mother’s house. He bought new strong iron doors, barred windows and new locks. While installing the metal work in the walls of the house they re-did the front façade of the house in one go, giving it a fresh new look. Of the 50% profit that the teenagers earn they can spend a maximum of 25% to improve their family housing, this way giving their family a short term benefit too of their children’s participation in FairMail.

While they where at it they pimped up the front facade of the house

His family is very thankful for Elmer’s support, especially after his difficult youth. Mrs. Eva Maria, his mother, is very proud of her son and the results he is booking and thankful to the people who bought her son’s cards and pictures.

First cards from Morocco!

One of the first 4 Moroccan cards

One of the first 4 Moroccan cards

The first new FairMail card collection of 2013 is available now. Our German publisher produced 27 new cards. The new feature about this collection is that it contains the first 3 cards from FairMail Morocco. We are very proud that the Moroccan teenagers (Ibtissam, Siham and Fatimazahra) learned so fast how to combine commercial greeting card themes (like Birthday, New Baby and Friendship) with typical Moroccan symbols (like Moroccan baby shoes, “Hand of Fatima candles” and street cats).
