A unique opportunity to practise your hobby at the most fantastic locations, together with special people while being able to share your personal knowledge and experience with the most special people of all: the FairMail teenagers.” is how past participant Roel from the Netherlands describes his experience travelling with the Peruvian FairMail teenagers last month.

His fellow traveller Urville adds: “During the trip I enjoyed the places we visited, the food, the local inhabitants, the weather but most of all the interactions within the FairMail group. We really had so much fun together. It was great to see how motivated, enthusiastic and eager the FairMail teenagers go about with their cameras.”

To find out if FairMail’s photography trips would be just as much fun for you as they were for Urville and Roel, we are organizing an information session on Saturday the 10th of October 2015 from 15.00 to 17.00 in Amsterdam. If you are interested contact us here.

FairMail nominated for PwC’s “Transparency Prize”

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

TP-Banner-250x250px-WINse_FairMail_2015We were happily surprised upon hearing that FairMail was nominated for “Transparency Prize” organized by Price Waterhouse & Coopers.

After selecting 57 social enterprises, PwC researched which website had the most transparent communication about the social impact of the company. This way narrowing it down to 3 finalists. Besides FairMail the other two finalist are Dopper and Taxi Electric. You can read more about the prize here.

Transparency according to FairMail

Transparency has always been at the core of FairMail, both internally and externally. But what does that mean in practice?

Pro-active communication about the money

We are thankful for the trust our customers have that FairMail “walks its talk” and actually delivers what we promise. That starts with communicating clearly to the outside world about the money that the FairMail teenagers earn from the sale of their cards. This is stated per teenager on their personal profile page. Not only can you see how much each teenager earned but also the impact this money has had on their lives through the teenager’s personal stories and blogposts. To make sure this information is correct our customers can easily connect with the teenagers via email and Facebook on the profile pages and via the email address stated on each card.

External audits

Visitors to the FairMail website can also download our general year report giving an insight into the most important developments and numbers of the company and its social impact. FairMail’s social impact is also communicated every year in our blog and news letters. To be sure that all this information is correct, FairMail is externally audited by the auditors appointed by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) both in the Netherlands and in our production countries. You can read more about the last audits here.

Checking yourself as customer

Thirdly we offer people the opportunity to experience FairMail at first hand. Either by working as volunteer or by travelling with the FairMail teenagers during our photography trips. This way experiencing exactly how FairMail works with all the ins and outs.

For those who don’t have the possibility to go to Peru or India we have made a very extensive list of “Frequently Asked Questions”. This FAQ gives the answer to just about every aspect of FairMail, the way things work, the teenagers, its environmental policy etc.

Internal Transparency

Transparency the FairMail way is not only about being transparent to the outside world. Equally important is being very transparent internally, assuring the teenage photographers that they are receiving their fair share of the profit from the sale of their cards. Therefore every three months we share the quarterly profit-loss statement with them. You can download an example here.

To facilitate internal transparency, the teenager’s personal earnings in their FairMail education-, housing-, clothing- and medical funds are always accessible in the teenagers’ personal folders we have in the office. This way the teenagers can always see how much money they have left in their funds and when they made withdrawals.

Apart from that we regularly invite teenagers to visit Europe to see first-hand how their greeting card market works, meet FairMail’s customers and understand the value chain.

Thanks to:

We are very happy with this result. We couldn’t have made it so far without people helping us: we want to give a big THANK YOU to UNITid for making the interaction design of the FairMail website, TOOK Webdevelopment for actually programming the site and the Social Capital Foundation for providing the loan to invest in our new, and transparent, website.

New “Magic Cards” take personalization to a next level

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

At FairMail innovation doesn’t stop with making greeting cards a tool for keeping at risk teenagers on the right track. We also innovate our cards and since this week we offer a card that makes your message to your loved ones even more personal. In cooperation with Greetz we developed 3 FairMail Magic Cards on which you can personalize your card in an extra special way before it is sent off by post. Go on and have a try!

For example with this first image you can add the names of the couple that is about to get married as if their names were actually embroiled in the felt hearts, photographed by 15 year old Kzanier from Peru.

With this second image you can add the name of the birthday boy or girl on the tag of this birthday cake as if it was already written on it when 18 year old Anidela took the picture.

And with this third image you can write a message on the back of these relaxing beach chairs as if it were actually painted on the textile when 16 year old Juan Gabriel gave it his best shot.

Try it and you will see why we call them Magic Cards.

After finishing the design of your card, Greetz takes care of printing it and sending it off for you. You can even include flowers, fair trade chocolate or balloons with your card.

Just like with an ordinary FairMail card you can see the name, age and e-mail of the teenager who took the picture on the inside of the card. Plus the message that he or she earns 30 euro cents with the sale of that card to invest in his or her education. And that ain’t no magic!

More and more corporate customers are helping teenagers into the school benches

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

In pursuit of diversifying the income from the photography by the teenagers we are happy to see that more and more companies and organisations are asking FairMail to provide fairtrade images for their communications. This way not only helping the teenagers earn money to pay for their own education, but also providing added inspirational value for their communications.

Here are 3 examples of corporate communication helping teenagers into the school benches:

Year Report ASN Bank Foundation

The ethical ASN Bank has been a regular customer of FairMail for years now. For the 2014 year report of their foundation they asked FairMail to produce images of fair trade coffee producers in Peru. During the photography trip along the Organic Coffee Route Diana and Angeles shot images of the coffee farming family they stayed with for a couple of days. Allowing them to pay for their university education.

Producer images for fairtrade distributor El Puente

El Puente is one of Germany’s biggest distributors for the 800 German fairtrade shops. To communicate the story behind their fairtrade products they wanted pictures of their Peruvian producers. Therefor in November, 3 FairMail teenagers will travel to the capital of Lima for 3 days to visit 9 producer groups. Their pictures will not only show how they work, but also the impact fairtrade has on their lives.

Hotel Naylamp Website

Hotel Naylamp is based in the Peruvian fishing village of Huanchaco, just like FairMail Peru. When they wanted to update their website they asked the teenagers to shoot images of their rooms, restaurant and guests. Guided by 2 of our volunteer photography trainers they took the requested images during 4 FairMail classes. Definitely something different compared to shooting for FairMail’s Christmas cards!

New documentary: “Photography against child labour”

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

This new 11 minute documentary shows the harsh conditions under which children have to work in Peru and the contribution a social enterprise like FairMail makes to change these situations.

The documentary had its premiere just before FairMail’s European tour with Peruvian teenagers Anidela and Angeles and got its first media coverage. Told from these two teenagers’ perspective gives the issue of child labour a face and the interviews with their parents gives the viewer a deeper insight into the complex problems at the root of the issue.

The documentary also shows how Anidela and Angeles manage to make a structural change to their lives by taking pictures for FairMail. And how they can now go to university through the sale of their cards. This way not only providing themselves with a better future, but also for their parents and other people around them.

Besides the 11 minute full version there is also a short version (5 min) available and full length versions with German, Dutch and Spanish subtitles.

On demand the documentary can be sent on a DVD for public viewing. Please contact us for more information and shipping costs.

Juan Gabriel is top of the class

FairMail Peru photographer Juan Gabriel

The high school graduation wave in Peru still isn’t over. After 3 teenagers graduating in December, it was Juan Gabriel’s turn last month. He didn’t just graduate, he actually got the highest marks of all of his class mates!

Because Juan Gabriel spent a period of his youth wondering on the streets singing for money he got behind in school. The staff of the street children project he moved into thought it would be best for little Juan to get a more practical education and job experience. In order for him to get a high school degree he assisted a special weekend school which allows its students to work during the week. And with great success!

It turns out that Juan Gabriel has quiet some academic potential though. He even wants to pursue further studies at the university. The coming months he will prepare himself for the admission exam at a private institute, with the money he earned from the sale of his cards. This way he hopes to get in uni to study communication sciences. He will need a high score in his admission exam to get in, so brushing up his knowledge will be necessary.

On top of that he is also studying English at another institute and got a scholarship to study photography outside of FairMail. All in all Juan Gabriel is doing a great job in developing his potential and be able to help his family in the future. Because, despite the problems they had when he was young, he hopes to be able to build a real house on the piece of land his family squatted on the edge of the city. And that way providing him with a bed that doesn’t get wet when it rains.

Introducing 3 new teenagers in Peru

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015
The three new FairMail teenagers

The three new FairMail teenagers

The FairMail family just expanded with 3 new members! Since April Medalit, Angelica and Paul are working hard to fully understand their new camera’s and get a grasp of the basics of digital photography.

Getting this far is already quite an achievement for them. A group of 5 teenagers started a trial period in March to fill the 3 upcoming vacancies. The 5 teenagers were put forward by the local charities FairMail collaborates with as they all could do with a bit of support to stay on the right track in life.

During the month long trial period they all got a basic photography training and the chance to convince us that they were the ideal candidates to make optimal who would make optimal use of the opportunities FairMail would be providing. Simply by showing us their motivation both for FairMail as for school, by getting to the photography classes in time, being responsible with our camera’s and friendly with our other team members.

After one month 3 teenagers convinced us that they would be able to take maximum advantage of the free camera and training we would provide them with. They were very happy and proud when they heard the news. But also a bit sad for the 2 teenagers who unfortunately weren’t accepted for FairMail (yet).

We wish Paul, Angelica and Medalit all the best the coming years and hope to be able to show you their first FairMail card soon. On their personal profile pages you can already read more about them, connect with them through Facebook or by email and vote on their first photos. They have got so much talent!
